What Upgrade Next?

Hey, I want to upgrade sometime in the near future. My system meets my needs atm, but I want to get it ready for Vista.

Currently I am running:

3.08 Ghz 'Prescott' Pentium 4
1gb Corsair DDR Platinum RAM
Gainward 7900GT Golden Sample

For me the next obvious upgrade seems to be to a dual-core CPU, but I have some questions.

What is the difference between intel Dual-Core and Core 2 Duo?

And would 2gb of ram be more beneficial?

My mobo can take DDRII 667 RAM, and conroe CPU's. I want to spend as little cash as possible.

thanks :)

If you can run DDR2 with a P4 then I would get 2GB of DDR2 667 first, then upgrade your CPU to a Core 2 Duo later.

That way you get a very beneficial upgrade in two small but beneficial steps. :)

The 7900GT is fine, probably quite a bit of life left in that.

thanks, i'll do that then.

could anyone tell me what's so good about Core 2 Duo's compared to Intel Dual Core processors please? Debating which one to get... noting I am on a tight budget

Core 2 Duo is much faster and uses a lot less power, also generates much less heat.

Probably the best bang for buck processors going, and even a stock E6300 would last you quite a long while to come. If you overclock, then these things are practically your wet dream (especially if you can wait for the E4300.)

Since your board already supports them, it's definitely the way forward from your P4.
