What upgrade path to make?

I don't think a AM2+ will work in it either. Like i said earlier, the fastest cpu your board will take is a X2 6000+ which was one of the earlier AM2 cpu's. There are quite a few on the bay for sale but £50 delivered seems a lot for such an old cpu.

I disagree. I would'nt advise anybody to build a new rig around a dying platform. 775 is several years old now and is being left behind by the newer sockets. As the high end cpu's are drying up they are getting more and more expensive. Q9550 cpu's for example are rare in retailers now and just about the only way to get one is second hand on the bay and the price on there has taken off big time and is only going to get worse. Good for people like me when we decide to jump ship but bad for anyone who wants a easy upgrade.

AMD is the best bang for buck at the moment with a Athlon X2 and AM2+ motherboard coming in at around £95. The best way would to buy a X6 1055T as it will last a lot longer but with a new mobo and ram it's over the OP's £200.

I stand by my original advice and would say to the OP to upgrade the graphics card now and start saving to replace his rig with a up to date system. The X1650XT was'nt a very good card when it came out and would get an absolute hiding from even one of todays low end cards. It's also likely that the OS is a OEM version so a new operating system would be needed with a new motherboard anyway.

Right im going to need to tread carefully on this reply:

He wanted to upgrade from a AthlonX2 4200, E6500 are cheap as chips and a serious upgrade.

I agree with with a better card completely, the 1650 was a fun card back then , mine overclocked great, but yes any low end cards now would kill it.

My advice right from the get go only cost £99, leaving £101 for a graphics card.

for £200 my advise...well, i agree with.

PS on a side note, never even thought on the AMD side, bang for buck your most likely.....sorry you are right

Dont forget a new psu too, whilst he Cosair CX400 is a good choice as recomended earlier, Id be tempted to try n get something better so you can carry it over to your next build rather than have to buy another new one next year, eg

Palit GeForce GTX 460 768MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £112.79 (£95.99)
Corsair TX 650W ATX SLi Compliant Power Supply (CMPSU-650TXUK) £73.99 (£62.97)
Sub Total : £158.96
Shipping cost assumes delivery to UK Mainland with:
DPD Next Day Parcel
(This can be changed during checkout) Shipping : £9.50
VAT is being charged at 17.50% VAT : £29.48
Total : £197.94

Both these could then be reused when you rebuild main part of system, whenever you have the cash

Yes, it probably would be the sensible route. Was swithering over just getting a card in the 70-80 range and saving the rest for the new build, but better off having something which will last abit longer I suppose.
How does the 768MB version 460 compare to the 5770 in peoples opinion? I wouldn't be expecting the latest games at full whack, but just curious!
