What version of Windows Vista is everyone buying?

Do you have to be a Computing student at uni to get it for free or can anyone from any course get a copy? And is it only some (i.e large) uni's that offer it for free? I go to a pretty small uni and i really cant seem them giving anything to anyone for free.

It's only for Uni who have a MS Campus Agreement or similar VLA. It'll also only be avaliable for those studying a Computer related, Science or Engineering course.

Hummm - seems loads of people will be breaking various license agreements to get it installed without buying it.
Borrowing it from work, installing it under work schemes (you're all going to have to tell me about this magical work license agreements whereby people are allowed to install the OS on home machines - cannot say I've seen them and I'm paid to know about them).
The MSDN versions only get 10 activations - so I guess once a place of work has done its illegal distribution of the MSDN download 10 times and all those people have activated that will put that key out of action for a while.

Maybe if the OP had wanted a better idea of who will actually be buying what you should have asked for just people who were actually going to go out and buy it and get it legally.

Erm, none, xp is good enough for a few years yet. Any games (worth playing) released in the next couple of years will happily run on xp!

I suppose the only way I could think of it being done legally is if they buy a licence specifically for home use. I see no clause in the VLA to suggest home users can't be licenced on a business agreement.

I'll probably buy the Home Premium edition when it is released.

However I notice some of you guys say you are using the MSDN edition from work? Don't you have a certain number of activations on the MSDN licences or have you actually managed to get Volume Licence keys? (ignore that, just seen Stoofa's post about the 10 activations)

Howecver, has your company managed to get Volume licences yet?

My work's license agreement allows employees to use "internal" copies at home. As long as the PC is sometimes used for homeworking - which mine is.

Nothing illegal about this at all. Despite what the mass media and moaners say, the license agreements for Windows are actually quite relaxed.

I don't suppose you know what agreement that is do you? Just so I can read up.

Vista SP1 is slated for Q3'07.
Strictly speaking there is no schedule for Vista SP1 yet. Having said that the plan is for Vista SP1 and Longhorn Server to bring the two code bases back together so expect to see them around the same time (with Vista SP1 possibly appearing a little after LHS). Target for LHS is currently H2 2007.

Most Enterprise Agreements include "home use rights" that allow employees to use the same software they use on their work PC on their home PC whilst they are employeed by that company. Check your licensing agreement under EA and SA(software Assurance) benefits. A lot of EAs also include employee purchase options that allows employees of a company with an EA to purchase Microsoft software at significantly discounted prices.

The one caveat to that tends to be MSDN subscriptions. They are intended for one person only (i.e. It's one MSDN license per person, not one for a team of 10 people and they can all use). MSDN is also strictly only for development / test systems, not your day to day workstation. Saying I code at home occasionaly so that's why I have Vista installed full time on my home PC would be pushing it a little if you use your home PC for normal email/games/music/surfing most of the time.

Of course that's the letter of the license agreement and I doubt anyone would ever check....

Why don't people wait until the pricing for the OEMs of Vista is released? With the offer on the voucher being vaild until after the Vista shipping date then evn if the cost is massively higher you still have the option of the MCE version.

Shrug. I've heard numerous Microsofties say Q3'07 for Vista client SP1. There's no requirement for Longhorn Server to RTM before they can release SP1 for Vista. I'd hazard a guess that they'll release it during the RC phase of Longhorn Server.

SP1 will be built on the Longhorn Server codebase.
