What was the last decent RPG ?

3D first person: Kingdom Come Deliverance, Cyberpunk 2077

3D third person: Greedfall, Vampyr

2D top down: Pathfinder Kingmaker, Pillars of Eternity 1 and 2, Wasteland 3

I was playing Tyranny not too long ago and while I didn't finish it (I normally don't with RPGs), I was enjoying it a fair bit. Probably more than I did Pillars of Eternity.

As much as I loved Tyranny and think it was one of the best CRPGs ever made, it's probably for the best you didn't finish it.
The story suddenly speeds up and gets REALLY exciting and then BOOM. Credits roll, no follow up, awful DLC released that adds nothing to the game but feels like it was cut content to begin with. Very disappointing

That's a shame. I rarely finish any RPG tbh, I normally play a game a lot, burn out on it, take a break and when I've come back I've forgot what's going on so I start again.

Not at all, its pretty tedious after a while, no dungeons of note, loads of boring ? with utterly pointless rewards, crap loot, poor combat, endless dialogue. Its good for a bit but not great. :p

Each to their own! Personally, I think it's the greatest RPG ever made :D

I will play it again if they add RTX but doesnt make my top 5. :p

I actually think they will be this year, I believe I read that somewhere. Honestly, give it a go, don't focus on the map ?'s too much, they are just stuff to do if you're hoofing it from point a to point b.

The meat of the game is in the contracts, side quests and main quests. Agreed, there is a lot of dialogue in it but personally, that's what I love. There is no fetch quests, each quest is personal and has it's own story. From slaying a possessed tree (not even kidding) to being an artists assistant, it's all unique.

I put about 60 hours in :p Enjoyed it but too many flaws and boring stuff at times.

It's funny, everytime I see a complaining post about TW3, and check the poster, it's the good old same old chroniclard. For years and years now. Never change :p

I've never been able to get into TW3.

Just refunded Disco Elysium after giving it a whirl. I can see the merit in it, but the writing was just way too try-hard and I don't really feel like playing something so bleak right now :P

Mass Effect games are probably my favourite, and the recent Assassin's Creed games qualify as RPGs these days....for me the definition is about playing a role, not a game built on dice-rolling which I guess is the traditional definition.

The original Deus Ex would probably go down as my all time favourite, but I've never been able to enjoy the more recent games as they're too bogged down in tech doodads and overly busy UI.

I loved TW3 and I normally don't have much patience for extended dialogue. Many of the stories and side quests are beautifully crafted. The Bloody Baron still sticks with me now quite vividly.

As for the OP - depends what subgenre of RPG you really enjoy.

Divinity - Original Sin 2 is absolutely superb if you like turn-based.
Witcher 3: Amazing if you are in it for the story and some nice meaty combat with plenty of options.
Grim Dawn: Not new, but a really great ARPG with tonnes of phat lewt but I'd get the DLCs too.

Mass Effect remastered will be worth a go if you've not played the trilogy.

I also really rate Horizon Zero Dawn as one of the most unique RPG/Action crossover style experiences I've had in a long time.
