I remember my friend showing it me when it came out. It seemed to add almost nothing to cs (which was free) , counter strike source was on the horizon. And the most pointless thing of all it had that absolutely terrible single player mode tagged on..

When CZ was first announced it was marketed as CS2 and many of the videos around implied that there were going to be helicopter's, damage to limbs that would need a team mate to drag you to safety and other added features. But by the time it came out these things had been cut and CS:S had arrived making CZ pointless unless you wanted a poor sigle player FPS.

Buying it allowed you to beta test CS:Source, after 30 seconds of "omgz this is amazing, omgz barrels lawl" realised source was going to be the biggest dissapointment since ever...

CSS is miles ahead of CZ.

Personally I love CSS over the older incarnations. Essentially the same game with graphics updates. (CZ is the same, but pointless with the release of CSS.)

The game was originally made by Ritual Entertainment but Valve found that reviewers didn't like it so it was completely remade by Turtle Rock studios. Ritual's original version is the Deleted Scenes bit on the new game.

I'm not sure if I've picked you up correctly or not, are you sure CSS is the same game as CS just with better graphics? That's kind of disturbed me a little, I played CS since 1.3 and I'm sure there are people on here who have been playing even longer than that who will tell you that CSS is a very different game to CS. I'm not saying CSS is a bad game by the way, it's come a very long way since it's first release but interms of gameplay I don't think it's in the league CS was.

I was under the impression it was 1.6 jazzed up.

Probably a few little differences, but then again I was never hardcore when it came to 1.6. Though I did play it a lot

Essentially the aim is the same in the game. The weapons are the same, the engine is updated and if you configure the servers properly the hit reg is as good too. The game works slightly differently though due to small changes valve made in the recoil system etc, meaning that if you are good at cs1.6 you are not necessarily as good at css (and the other way round), which of course the pros didn't like. Also lots of servers are misconfigured so hit registration can be quite bad on source in these cases, whilst 1.6 in more forgiving in that respect.

Mainly it's the same game, but because "pros" don't like dropping back to being bad at the game due to the minor differences, it's supposedly different. (Same thing in CZ, if you are good at 1.6 you aren't necessarily good at that either.)

I didn't really experience any skill decrease when I converted from CS to CSS, it's just a different game. If you went on to a 1.6 server and played for 30 mins on inferno or cbble or whatever and then did the same 30 mins on a CSS server it's just not the same. I hear you about the hit register, I've found it to be very streaky depending on the server. I haven't actually played in a few months, must get a game soon.

I didnt see the point of it but then again i think CSS was half arsed aswell yes it had tiny improvemeants but it cut a fair amount of maps out also got rid of the VIP mode which i enjoyed doing especially on oilrig.

Hopefully if we ever get another CS incarnation it will put vip mode back in and more maps in it. I know this is mods for VIP mode and some people re-made some of the older maps but well its besides the point :P

Re CSS compared to original CS, the main difference is running and gunning is much more of viable way to play in CSS. Theres far less of a "stun" when you get hit so you can keep on strafing, and the guns spread pattern is more random. Feels like most guns are made so the extent of the cone of fire is about right for people who spray centre of mass, so you get more random headshots. Footsteps are also much quieter so people run more in CSS. Playing CSS well is still quite difficult, but even the best players can get killed by strafing noobs if they're unlucky. CSS is still way better than most other FPS's out atm tho imo if you want a competitive game (COD has no recoil for eg).

CZ gave me a good run tbh, for a while I limited internet access, was cool to have mini achievements to run through :)

they should add achievements to CSS and remarket it a bit, still plenty of life in CSS

im not sure, but it would come with the release of half life 3 i reckon inless they decide to release a css made on the orange box engine
