what was wrong with this article ? number plate dirty ?

Forget that, his driver’s side front tyre is as bald as he is.

Seriously, it’ll be a combination of cheap camera set at a poor angle, the camera facing into the sun, dirt on rear reg plate, angle of rear rear plate or a non-conforming number plate.

What's his front tyre got to do with it?

Also this doozy:

A Smart Parking spokesman said Paul's fine had been cancelled "as a gesture of goodwill" and that the company no longer ran the car park in Narborough.

A gesture of goodwill is an odd way to say "because we ****** up" isn't it?

Anyone know of a parking company that isn't just bottom feeding scum? It's one industry that seems to have a barrier to entry requirement of having to have sold your own mother for a few quid.

Seen a few stories like this. Seems like the machine misses people going out sometimes so thinks they never left.

The parking companies likely install these things as cheaply as possible.

He shouldn't have paid them anything. They can threaten debt collection all they like, but debt collectors can't actually take anything without the owner's permission. It has to go through court first.

Sounds to me like he lived nearby (as it says in the article) and he just parked there overnight and covered his rear plate when he was leaving each time and thought he'd somehow get away with it, which to be fair he did.

perhaps yes, but a lot of them automatically issue a fine after a certain time anyway, leaving or not

I assume he thought the fact they would only ever detect him entering would mean that he'd maybe confuse the system, and ultimately win any appeals.

He shouldn't have paid them anything in the first place, should have just waited for them to take him to court, which would never happen as the evidence would show he was in the right (unless he was just covering his plate up).

They take about 5% of cases to court. I’ve never had one take me or anyone I know to court. They send about 2 or 3 increasingly threatening letters before just giving up.

Well there was something different about his plate compared to everyone else's, and he just happened to live by the car park.

Not at all exclusive to parking companies, I've had the same line from plenty of other types of company as well. A "gesture of goodwill" would be some kind of compensation over and above just putting things right, but - as you say - it's become a euphemism for "we done goofed, but we aren't going to admit it so we'll pretend we're actually doing you a favour by returning the money we shouldn't have taken in the first place"

Because it's hard for them to win unless they have rock solid evidence and all their procedures are in place. These companies often seem a bit shady too and they probably don't want it being dug up in court.
