First thing that came to mind when I saw that car was "Watch out for the cyclist Richard"
Slightly incorrect m8 - Early shows show an "S" model but Richards Rover was mostly an SE model either 213 or 216, much posher than mine with it's windy up windows.

1978 Triumph Dolomite 1850HL, an automatic (I did a manual test at the time though). Got it when I was 17 in summer 2003, I think.
Fantastic piece of machinery with an extremely comfortable and well-built interior
Always picked up positive comments off everyone about it, including the girls who thought of it as 'that cool little white car'
Insurance was £1800 for the first year with Norwich Union (as I wanted to accumulate NCB) - including the Sprint alloys - but this was compensated by the fact that come the 2nd year, with 1 years no-claims, it dropped to £550! My friends in a similar state were still paying 1200 on their bland 1.0 litre Corsas come that point.....muhah!

Not too sure on the horse power but my first car was a crappy brown coloured Mini Metro. It was an A reg (1984 I think) 1.0L - hated the bloody thing and parked it the boot of a Fiat Tipo after about three weeks of ownership 
Ford Focus Zetec 1.6, still drive it now.
Cost me £1750 to insure TPFT when I was 18, dropped to £900 with 1 years ncb. I live in the 2nd worst postcode band there is so I don't see any reason why you wouldn't be able to insure one for far cheaper.

F plate Astra Meret Estate 1.3 3 door.
It was given to me by my folks because no one else wanted it. It rusted away before I passed by test, ended up selling if for £50. I hadn't actualy ever even driven it.
When I passed I ended up with an e reg VW Polo 1.3 CL. It's quite easily the 3rd worst car I've ever driven. Insurance was about £750 for the first year, I think it went down to about £600 the year after.
