What was your first overclock?

XP2000, 1666mhz to 1820mhz Alpha pal heatsink and a 80mm delta screamer on it

I always remember when overclocking a few years ago - Pentium / K6-2 etc (before 3D Cards came in) that even a small overclock would be really noticeable on the speed of Windows and games.

I had 233mmx at 266 then 300 with frozen bottle of milk next to intake fan

Then p700 at 950

Then P4 2.4 at 2.8

Then P4 2.8 SL6Z5 at 3.9 (Frozen bottle of milk again)

Now have E6600 2.4 at 3.4

Any overclock more than 33% is good, anything below isn't really an overclock!

Ill take the performance crown for being SO OLD that I 1st thing I overclocked was a DX50 486 overdrive chip at 55, 60 wasn't stable, it was put in the 'overdrive socket' on the mainboard from what i can remember, original on-board chip was 486SX25 from memory, also remember having to solder stuff to up the speed, no bios or even jumper switches for overdrive back then

EDIT: No miketimbers and steve_pc also in the same era ! nice 1 lads ! noobs arnt they :p :D

EDIT2:Since then:

Cyrix 166@180 ish (i think)
Celeron 400@566ish (600 near the end! AWESOME)
T-Bird 1ghz @ 1.2ghz
Pally 1533 @ 1.67
Pally 1.83@ 1.96
Duron modded to Athlon T-Bred 1.5ghz-ish original, 2.2ghz o/c
A64 S754 [email protected]
A64 S939 Winchest @ 2.5ghz
A64 S939 3700+ @ 2.8ghz

and now Opteron dual core 170 @ 2.75 ghz

Will leave it here for now (nothing stresses my pc that I use, it olibertates any game played, totally wipes the floor in office, my gawd its fast, even photoshop flys, awesome), next upgrade im going to be strong, and holdout until 0.45nm CPU (or smaller die size), 4+ cores (around then)

486sx25 @33mhz

Did they even have heatsinks then ? I cant remember. I remember the heatsink falling off my cyrix chip and it just slowed down & froze till I put it back on and then was fine again :)

Don't worry you're not the only old timer, I started with a 80286/12. What you're describing sounds like an oscillator mod. As I remember the first boards, the CPU's were soldered on, later ones had a push in sockets. Where you had to work you way around the edge of the chip or bend the pins.

Ive had a few PCs from the PIII-450 @ 600.

Celeron 667 @ 950, 100FSB
Tbird 1000 @ 1333, 133FSB
Duron 1100 @ 1300MHz
Sempron 2500+ @ 2000MHz stock volts.
Duron 1600 Applebred modded to 256KB L2 cache @ 2350MHz
XP1700 TBred B @ 2400MHz x2 - what superb chips these were
XP2500 Mobile @ 2380MHz
3000+ Venice @ 2400MHz
3500+ Venice @ 3246MHz (max air) or 2907MHz 24/7
3700+ San Diego @ 2750MHz

now on an X2 3800 @ 2750MHz but can do 3006MHz 1.55v if I lower my RAM divider prime stable.

i80286 (12 - 16) - for Wing Commander(!)
AMD80386DX (40 - 50?) Can't recall
C6x86PR150 (133 - 166)
Pentium (166-233)
K6-2 (400 - 484?)
Duron(650 - 1015) :)
TbredB XP1700+ (1433 - 2000)

Time to upgrade I think and I'm due an Intel now they're making 'proper' chips again ;)

Pentium 166 -> 200MHz, i still have the damn thing sitting on my desk and it still works perfectly fine, I used it as a server until a few months ago :p

Indeed, my second overclocked processor.

Had my AXIA 1.0Ghz to 1.4Ghz on air with a Thermaltake SK6 with a delta screamer! :D

I had an awsome overclocker. I had a celeron 400 running at 650! Now that was an overclock with a blue orb cooling it.

I also had two voodoo2's running in SLI. They were overclocked by...... 1mhz! Any more than that and the machine went dead. :p

486 sx 25 @ 36 i think. Didnt have a clue as to what i was doing,
ahh..the good old days Windows 3.1

But these new CPUs are somin. My QX arrived today, OCed to 3.2 no probs, Installing Vista as we speak.

There was no dividers on those 486's but then some chips came at 50mhz anyway so I suppose it was ok.

What are you using 4 cores for :o

My other half will take my E6600 rig (probably run it just above stock - Ill keep the P5W DH mobo & get her an AsRock or somin)

I'll build a new rig around the P5W & QX until I find the guts to get a new mobo in the new year.
