I just think there's a leap in logic between a release of personal data and the government locking down the internet. Arguments like that never take into account the huge opposition there would be to any such plans.
the hacking goes on, the message is clear, we do it for the good of us all, lots of people agree and people are being won over, then they do something daft like take control of the iss, next thing they catch them all and the web is fully government controlled
Have you read up on previous false flag operations , let me tell you there a lot worse then releasing some minor details on the internet! Now im not saying it is 100% goverment conspiracy just i wouldn't immediately dismiss the idea.
Pbs, sony, nintendo, Blackberg. Some of them were not exactly hard, but guys behind these won't be your average cave dweller.
Also I am not sure if they really traced them back to China, perhaps they were just spotting similarities with other cases and can't be sure.
Maybe if this was the 90s or they'd stopped after a couple of sites and melted into the background.
In this day and age bouncing around a few proxies, etc. isn't anything like as effective as it used to be and every time they make a new action its leaving more data that can be used to narrow down where to look for them.
I wouldn't put it past being a false flag operation tho seeing as they still seem to be using a lot of the same back end that people operating under the collective of Anonymous were using which confusingly LS stated was infiltrated by the feds and claim their current spate of attacks are in retalliation...
Really? If they were using 5 proxies for example, do you realize how hard that would be to get hold of the end user? It would take countless court cases before you would even begin to get near, then you would have the trouble when you get to a country that won't comply and you are screwed.
I am not an expert, but if it was that easy can you explain how in the last 20 years the number of Sceners caught has been incredibly low considering how many groups there are? In fact most of the "sceners" that have been caught were the ones who were pirate dvd sellers.
You won't see law enforcement agencies these days tracking back proxy by proxy.
The reason why not a lot of people are caught is because it just makes it harder when you drive the more hardcore people deeper underground, keeping the mid level scene alive and not clamping down on lesser infractions means its easier to infiltrate the mid level groups and let them lead you to the bigger fish.

sceners are nothing like hackers ill tell you how it works.
group cracks game, group has its own FTP site hosted somewhere very very most likely 1000mbit.
group lets people called "couriers" have access to this site they are extremely trusted people who also have contacts and access to other release groups FTPs these "couriers" FXP transfer from one site to another they race each other just like the groups do.
if you win a race you get an allowance in GB on the website
now you have a whole bunch of sites the different couriers are competing to get the releases to starting at the very top and working all the way down like a family tree so to speak getting less importaint on the way down.
generally a courier has his own FTP dump site hosted somewhere on 100mbit generally from someone on the BBB isp in sweden. usually they transfer to there and then elsewhere after so they dont waste loads of there data amount.
everything is very decentralised and very hard to track all the way to the top.
P2P like torrents etc is at the very bottom the real scene has no contact with P2P at all they dont care about releasing games for the public they only do it to race other groups.
some of the groups that were busted at the start of the scene busts were ran by very succesful people in the real world
I'm with you on this, see how they look now and then in 10 years time when they get out of prison
