What will give me lower temps than a Coller Master Hyper 212 Evo

Afternoon folks

I'm currently running an oc's i5 3570k using a Cooler mAster Hyper Evo 212. Got it oc'd to 4.2 but would like to push it a little further. Currently getting temps in the low 80s and this jumps to high 80s if I push to 4.3.

Tried looking into coolers but there are so many out there it was a bit confusing. Any recommendations of alternatives that would give me a further temp drop?

I'm happy to consider another air cooling unit or even a self-contained watercooler. Noise is a fairly big issue - wouldn't want to be much or any louder than I am now.

I've seen some good reviews of the Be Quiet CPU Cooler Dark Rock Pro 2 but availability seems very limited over here.

Quite a lot will question is what are you willing to spend or do? A possible free(ish) option would be to pop the lid and replace the tim with CLU.

Alternatively let us know how much you want to spend

what cpu v are you using for 4.2ghz? you might be able to use stock voltage or even undervolt which would lower temps

you can reduce stock voltage if you use a negative offset to reduce voltage further

maybe try -0.010v offset and keep going until its unstable

I would go for the top end dual rad coolers like the noctua d14 but makesure it can fit inside your case

I would go a big air cooler over CLC; quieter, cheaper and less chance of potential problems. Air cooler don't have problems.. other than an occasional fan getting noisy and needing replaced.

IIRC Uncle Petey had a Alpenfohn K2 in his Shinobi. £59.99

Prolimatech Megahalems for £42.98 + fan of your choice. Only a couple degrees warmer than K2

Alpenfohn Matterhorn Pure £29.99; probably the best deal as it's in same league as Megahalems.

that's good, and yeah keep going till it becomes unstable and then add one two clicks

also test with games as ivy tends to crash games to desktop if cpu voltage is too low

The k2 and d14 both fit fine in the standard sized shinobi, ocuk sell a few systems that use the k2 and this case. And a fella i game with has the d14 in one. Personally i would reccomend the d14/k2 over the megahelims, having owned it and then a k2, the k2 offers much better cooling and less noise as the megahelims needs pretty high speed fans to get the best out of it.

Yep, im not that keen on the closed loop jobs. Too many reports of failures, not much to go wrong with a few bits of metal on the air coolers. Though with those two coolers you need low profile ram.

I would :)
One thing to mention is your ram height. The K2 will fit over it, but you'll have to raise the front fan (if you use it at the front). Case clearance will be tight with the fan raised.
I can't guarantee it'll clear the side panel, but it should just about :)

Either way, I'd heartily recommended ditching the stock fans and using a single Thermalright TY-147 (£5.99) in the centre. This will match, if not exceed the performance of the 2 stock fans.
It's not that they're bad or anything, it's just that TY's are awesome and very cheap.

Ed: posted before seeing your reply.

just to be clear, what voltage are you running at? what is it set to in the bios and what does CPU-Z report?

please don't tell me it's set on "auto" in the bios

I recently did a haswell build at 4.5ghz with a Phanteks PH-TC12DX (vengenace ram as well) with no issues at 1.25v
hits low 80's with Prime95, and stays below 80 in normal gaming

I'm looking for a good cooler that won't foul my Vengeance's too, I want to run my 2500K @ 4.2, keep temps under 80 whilst playing SKYRIM heavily modded with an ENB, the stock cooler could not handle 4 cores close to flat out even @ stock.

I could not handle prime either, just could not stop the temp rising even flat out with side panel off.

you must have a fairly bad chip, because one of my mates runs the [email protected] on a 212 and it stays under 80c in prime and ibt

he's on a stock cooler I think, which is pants tbh

the vengeance heatsinks pull off if you warm them up,otherwise id switch to some low profile memory and the biggest cooler you can fit, then don't worry about temps ever again
