What will the 50 series launch mean for used 40 series prices?

As someone who has only recently got a new 4090 my thoughts are that I personally won’t part with my 4090 TUF OG OC for less than £1,500. No matter what happens after the 5090 is out.

I’m sure others will sell theirs a fair bit cheaper with wayyyy less warranty, but mine is only two months old and never hits above 42c so I’m extremely happy with it.

If I got a 5090 for MSRP and couldn’t sell my 4090 for £1500+ I’d sell the 5090 for what I paid for it instead.

I think the relase of the 5090 will paradoxically *increase* prices for 2nd hand 4090's.

5090 largely paper launch and unless you can get a rocking horse **** FE you're likely paying £2,300+ for something that, in gaming, just isn't that more impressive than a 4090 and which consumes an even more inordinate amount of energy.

Prices have started to climb back up again on auctions sites. Sold listings are now £1400 - £1650 depending upon the model.

A 4090 just provisionally sold for 1350 after the seller ignored offers in the 1250 range, 'as that's what previous cards had sold for, on the MM. It wasnt a particularly expensive one to start with (Zotac) either.

I think the prediction made by myself and others isn't being incredibly vindicated.

The high(er) price and next to non existent availability of the 5090 combined with the rubbish 5080 likely means 4090 used prices won't be trending back down again for a few months yet...

Someone wanting a 4090 on AVforums mm willing to pay £1500 lol.

If it comes with a good chance of a warranty back up from the initial seller it pretty much blows paying circa £2,500 for a 5090, you can't even buy at the price anyway, out of the water value wise whilst providing most of the performance.

Kind of wish I just grabbed a used 4080 when they were going for mid £700s a few weeks ago. Meh, I guess the 5070ti will match it if it OCs well like the 5080 + new arch that might age better.

Sorta the same here - but I suppose we held out to wait; it could have gone either way, and it didn't go ours!

I'm in analysis paralysis right now, I was hoping for a somewhat reasonable price drop on a 4080 to replace my 3070 but it just doesn't seem to be happening. Maybe the right choice is a 5070 (or ti).

I think the Ti would be worth it (assuming you can get one), not sure the 5070 will beat the 4070S by much.
Depending on timelines (and unless you're tied to nV tech), the new AMD cards will hopefully be worth consideration.

Would be nice if they'd hurry up and actually announce something (spec/price/perf) though :D
As heaton said though, you'll definitely want to increase VRAM (and I think 16GB should be a minimum!)

edit: I wouldn't bank on a substantial price drop on 4080(S), as Gibbo said in another thread, they're getting smarter about clearing the channel... tbh I think they may have deliberately limited stock on the new gen to clear back-stock, given that the new gen (sub 5090, some people will buy the fastest whatever happens) are a bit of a disappointing uplift!

Time for an update now the dusts settled a bit...

The market will decide once the cards are in the wild, things could change either way quite quickly. For my money the 4090 will hold some of it's value, but not the £1500+ it had been commanding.

Turns out £1,500 was optimistic. The eBay average for sold cards is closer to £2,000 and even on the MM someone recently turned down £1,500 for a fairly run of the mill 4090.

They will drop in price as they always do on the second hand sene.
Fall massivley, performance doesnt dictate the market, being able to tell everyone at least 6 times a day you own a 5090 does. Who wants to have a 4*** in their signature when thats so last year and worth zero internet points.

Nope

I been offered 2K for my 4090FE with like 10 hours max usage on it, was unboxed for a year as well, not sure what to do.

Yeah I think a lot of people sold their 4090 expecting to get a 5090 and then there are also those who were waiting and then both either were disappointed or simply can't get a card, hence the 4090 increasing in value.

But why the sudden rush to waste heaps of money/the sudden need for a 4090 level card?

These people could have had a 4090 for RRP at any point last year.

Then just because you can't get a 5090 for a few months, people are desperate to spend £2000 or more on a used 4090?

Just seems insane. Sometimes i feel so detached from how other people think. I could never bring myself to spend such a silly amount on a used card when i could have got a new one for far less months ago. I would simply wait a bit.

Who knows it seems mad to be, but for example people who had a 4090 and wanted a 5090 are happy to spend whatever to get the best, so if they sold their 4090 and are using a temporary card, they don't want to wait months using said card, or could have been doing a new build and had been told to wait till the 50 series released, and again didn't want to wait months for availability to improve whilst the rest of their system is unusable without the gpu.
