What would be a normal temp for an i7 930?

I just downloaded realtemp and was surprised to see that it reported my CPU temp in the range of 60-70.

Considering I had just turned the computer on and had done nothing more than use the internet this seemed rather high to me.

I was thinking I should see temps around 30-40C is that right?

The ambient temp in the room would be ~20C.

Could these high temps be caused by a poorly seated heatsink or problems with the thermal paste?

could be badly seated heatsink, could be bad airflow in the case (are you using stock cooler?) , could be the program not reading it correctly.

try reading temps from the bios, reseatting the cooler, and checking case fans aint blocked

edit: one other thing is have you tired seeing what temps it hits under load (eg prime95)? i dont think it affects the I series, but you may have dodgy cpu probes

Yup I am using a stock cooler. (I am not overclocking)

I will check the temps in the bios

there shouldn't be airflow problems - I have plenty of fans all blowing in the correct direction!

neither can i! is there an alternative temperature monitoring tool you could suggest?

i just ran prime 95 to do a realtemp sensor test - some of the cores were hitting 100C so i stopped!

i am going to check the temps in the bios now, and if they are saying something close to the the realtemp temps then i will reseat my heatsink

Bios will generally only show the overall cpu temp, either the cooler is'nt seated right or far to much tim has been used, or a combination of the 2.

I am in the process of reseating right now as the temp readout in bios matched realtemp.

What counts as a lint free cloth? Will a clean dishcloth be ok? I.e the blue and white things you would buy in supermarket?

Its what i use, we buy like multi packs of them and i allways nick afew, aslong as its clean and unused it should be fine.

But you may wanna see what others say first.

i reseated and the temps are looking much more normal.

It took me literally over 2 hrs to reseat the ruddy stock intel heatsink!

i am not sure why it was so hard this time around, but i just could not get the locking pins to go through the holes in the motherboard. my thumbs are sore from trying to push them through. (yes i had not made the obvious mistake of leaving the pins in the removal orientation.)

must get myself a proper heatsink -with screws.....

Ermm does gigabyte make any temperature/voltage sensor programs? because real temp has never given me accurate results you could go try coretemp or if that dosent work go into bios and check the temps for when its not being used they shud not be too much different to being idle in windows unless you have not sitted the heatsink correctly.

My i7 930 idles around 40-45C and 65C on load, that about average?

Mine's exactly the same.
I was a little worried at first but noticing other threads around the web I'm pretty much settled that this is the norm. i7 930s just seem to be a pretty hot model.

Intel say they can be stressed safely at high temps on load but not to exceed 100C

Nice to see the reseat sorted it edward, yeh those push pins are a royal pain then the ***.

Its really scary sometimes just how much pressure you need to connected them, i really wish intel, would just switch to screws, but hey ho.

Not like many of us stick with there coolers for long lol.

Tell a lie, when my room is not hot, like it was last night, someone turned the heating up too high, hate things hot.. My i7 at around 37-43C which i much prefer, though why is one of the cores so much cooler than the rest?

My i7 920 is currently idling at 37-33-37-33 at 4ghz, not that i pay much attention to idle temps, load's are the ones to keep an eye on.

I have no idea how low my cores ideal on my E8400, stuck sensors @38c, but i have had my overal cpu down to 15c, the other week when it was chilly at night.

But yeh as setter says, idle temps mean nothing really, its load where it matters the most.
