What would be faster?

2 seagate 7200.10 SATA2 drives in RAID0 would be faster (sustained transfer rate, etc.) than one raptor and a lot quieter and cooler... however the raptor would beat them for access times which can make a difference depending on what your doing... my vote would be 2 seagate drives in RAID...
 
The sustained transfer rate of 2 Seagates in RAID0 will be significantly higher.

The random access & seek time of the Raptor is significantly faster.

Which is faster in real life? It depends very much on what you do, the Raptor might boot Windows a bit quicker because it can find the files faster but the Seagates could load say a game level quicker where a large contiguous file read is required.

Ok thanks, im still deciding on a Raptor or two seagate drives?

I will be doing mostly Gaming and Video Encoding and writing to DVDs.


Im getting a ASUS P5B-deluxe along with a E6600 and that particular motherboard can have a matrix Raid setup.

If i set up two hard disk in a RAID-0 setup and one hard disk fails i will most likely lose both data on both of the hard disks.

But in RAID-1 setup both hard disks have a duplicated image of each other right?

And then the Maxtrix Raid setup?

Out of the three what would you suggest?

And also what about one Raptor and one Seagate in either of the 3 setups possibly RAID 1 and matrix.?

One more thing, sorry, if i get the Raptor when would i start noticing a difference in speed because im filling it up how many GBs eg 100GB, 110GB etc...

Personally I use a RAID0 setup with 2 discs and backup any important data onto an external USB2 harddisc...

if your data is critical to you then intel matrix RAID with 4 discs would give you the best performance and redundancy possible...

I wouldn't try mixing raptor and seagate discs in RAID...

possibly get 1 Raptor to install the OS on and to backup critical data to and then a couple of seagates in RAID0 for games, encoding, etc.

Data on the outter edge of a platter is typically slower to seek and read/write to but the amount of data on your HDD doesn't directly impact that much on the performance due to fragmentation, etc... typically from inside to the outside of a platter the data rate will drop by about 20%.
 
Ok Thanks, if i go with one Raptor and then say one Seagate for games and stuff.

Ill install the O/S on the Raptor and then the games on the Seagate drive.

Is their any special way to install game straight onto the Seagate drive, for instance when installing a game it asks me to pick a directory then i will have to change it to install on a Seagate hard disk or can i setup something up so it knows to install it already on that particular hard drive. (Seagate)

Also what about losing performance and speed on a single raptor how much of the drive would i have to fill till i start seeing a performance and speed decrease?
