I'm looking to update my old machine for my dad to use. I'm a little stuck on what to do about the processor. Its a socket 939 motherboard and I have a choice between an a64 4000 or a 4800x2 - would i notice or should i say he notice a big difference when gaming?

everything would be at stock but i spose i could clock it.

I was just after a sort of comparison. Would it be work the extra 80 quid for the x2 chip if I'm not going to notice a huge or even moderate improvement.

What does your dad use the computer for?? And what chip do you currently have in the old machine??

If not gaming or multitask a single core Venice / San Diego will do very nicely. There are loads going for cheap atm in the clearance section.

Have you tried to overclock the chip a little? It's not really worth it to get another single core A64 so for me it's either the 3500+ or the dual core X2. But then X2s don't really give much performance increase when it comes to games.

They don't oh well I must be imagining things..

Newer games are supporting dual core processors. I certainly notice a difference in performance when playing Splinter cell Double Agent on one core. It ran like a dog.. It flies on both both cores with dual core optimizer on... It has certianly help prolong the life of my 7800GTX which is still running most games on the highest settings.

I've pushed to 2.4 stable but not really bothered messing around anymore than that.....

Perhaps i should and see what i can get and if i ram it then i spose buy a new one.?

Doesn't hurt trying really, just don't go crazy on the voltage and watch your temperature.

Remember to reduce the Hyper Transport multiplier and set RAM divider if necessary. Depends on what mobo you have if your machine won't post you may have to manually reset the CMOS yourself.

I have an A8n SLI premium board. with 2 gig twinx xms memory.

What should be a realistic target.

As for games mostly world of warcraft and half life2/cs:s

I have an Asus A8N Sli pre.. with an XP 4400+, 2 gig of PC4000 and an 7800GTX. I can run HL2 on the highest settings along with CS/S. Can't comment on WoW but I had no problems running COH on high settings. For a Garphics card that's nearly 2 years old, that's some doing. I'm convinced the dual core has prolonged it's usage as normally I upgrade the GC once every 12 months or so. That said, I will be upgrading the GC in the next month or so becuase it will struggle with STALKER and and Crysis but I'm not upgrading the CPU until October at least.
