What would cause a Mac to turn on by itself?

Hi,

A family member has an issue with their Mac, however I used one once maybe twice before, so I have got little idea why/what might be causing it.

The Mac turns on by itself even when shutdown at midnight everyday without fail unless unplugged at the mains. I believe it's running OS 10, but that's all I know about the machine.

Any have any advice or suggestions?

Does it have any peripherals plugged in? I've heard that the Elgato EyeTV things can do this. If so it may be worth searching with Spotlight to see if there is a file named 'AutoWake.plist' which could be put there to start up the Mac at certain times, would be in /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/ I think. Delete it if so.

Also check System Preferences > Energy Saver and click the schedule button, as you can choose a time to start the Mac up.

Also in the same pane, make sure 'wake for network access' (or similar) is not ticked.
