I am a private tenant, paying £600 rent and all bills.

If I were tomorrow to lose my job and had no income (partner at university), what would happen?

Just interested to know!

Straight onto housing benefit and depending on your partners student loan you may be eligible for JSA.

Surely his partners student loan wouldn't affect his JSA entitlement? That would be utterly ridiculous.

What have you done at work? You must be guilty of something to make this.

Not at all, I am not in any trouble or in a dodgy job, I just wondered, having never been on JSA in my life and always had work.

I think what triggered my to ask was another post in the life thread.

work in mcdonalds (providing that's not where you just got fired from) , or anywhere that has regular jobs going - bring in some money/gain more XP whilst looking for better work which realistically takes months.

As a couple you'd be entitled to the LHA rate for a 1 bedroom flat, around here in Torbay thats £95/week, subject to a benefit check. Which I likely to result in lower than £95/week.

Any surplus would have be made up from other sources. Council Tax would be paid in full. Bills are not included in the above, they are separate.

Income based JSA takes into account all incoming funds including Student Loans/Grants. The max amount of student loan is high enough to mean you won't receive JSA at all while the lowest means you'll receive pittance of no help.

Housing benefit also takes the student loan into account.

As above, it's entirely up to the landlord if they allow DSS tenants.

If you have a track record of being a good tenant chances are they will understand and allow you to stay. However, very few will take the risk of new DSS tenants on.

Also, if you're paying him cash in hand he may also ask you to leave if you need DSS support.

Nah, not straight onto housing benefit. You have to be out of work for 3 months before you become eligible. At least for me back in 2009. Signed on in Oct 2009, got HB from Jan 2010 onwards, which basically cancels out your council tax.

That is no longer the case. Last year when I was on housing benefit I went straight on with no problems.

Most councils will pay you directly also so that there's no way of your landlord knowing you're on housing.

Have you any savings?
This makes a massive difference, if you do, you will get 6 months JSA, and nothing else, no housing benefit, no anything else.
If you are penniless, then you will get housing, JSA etc, which might last longer than 6 months.
