What would you choose or alternative?

DO NOT get the galaxy mini, my girlfriend has one, and its terrible, its currently off for repairs.
I have the Defy but motorola support is horrific. I cant upgrade (legitamately) to 2.2 as they wont let me install the software from a Mac.

According to sarge78 the official ROM is available on xda-developers:

You can use a Mac compatible tool to flash your phone with the ROM. It might be also worth checking if the update is available OTA from your phone.

Once the OTA is available just download the update via wifi.

Got defy free monthly at the 13.70 and 30 cash back top cash back and cash back from buymobiles as well. Seems like a decent deal. Free defy 45 quid cashback :)

I upgraded to 2.2 without any problems although I used a Windows PC. There is also the aftermarket CM7 2.3.4 ROM available too:

If you stick with 2.2 I would get a custom launcher such Go Launcher EX or ADW.Launcher and use Home Switcher Froyo so you can test them out.

Cheers. I didnt know you could flash the ROM onto the phone, I'll have a look into that one.

Ive been trying to root the phone with superoneclick (cant get Z4root to work at all), but to get superoneclick to work on mac need to use the mono.framework, but I just cant get it working.

as far as I know its not available OTA, I hope it will be soon, but I doubt it.

It seems an earlier version of superoneclick works better or something along those lines. I would check on xda-developers first. There is the official 2.2 ROM on there too.

The 2.2 update was available for retail and Vodafone Defy phones earlier so it seems the delay is also partially down to T-Mobile.

I have a DEFY, it is a fantastic phone. I can put it in drinks, throw it out of my pocket, drop it out and about, stamp on it if needed ( :/ ) and it still works. It's pretty nifty. The only thing I miss is a better camera, a dedicated camera button and I'd love a slide out keyboard like the DesireZ.

Being able to do those things is not what defines a good phone.

Nice one Dave, don't forget to...

1. Root.
2. Overclock.
2. Remove bloat.
4. Phone t-mobile and get the 3rd party data speed cap thingy removed. (If it was with t-mobile :p)

The only thing I miss is a better camera, a dedicated camera button.

Use the volume rocker! Perfect for taking video in the sea/lakes/rivers etc ;) A great 1080p camera would be flippin awesome, there'd be a big price hike though... (one which I'd pay :D)

You don't have access to a Windows based machine?

Thanks root etc is planned. Just reading up on the 3rd party cap at 350kbps thats pretty brutal and will try and get that sorted out but from what I have read they can be real tards about changing it.
