Right, I work in a popular sports shop. It's pretty big as well. In total, there's around 15 ish workers (incl me), one assistant manager and one manager. Both the assistant manager and the manager are new to the store from transfers from another store.
The assistant manager is a great guy. He looks after you, cracks a few jokes and pushes you to do work. The manager, however, is good when she wants to be, pushes you rarely, and messes about too much!

Now, here's the problem. There is a girl who works amongst us. Lets call her Miss X. She literally gets away with absolute murder. During the X-Mas period when the store was rammed packed, everyone on textiles was busy, and the footwear dept was really understaffed. We needed Miss X to come on the shop floor and help us out. Instead, she's at the back in the office sitting down having a cup of tea with the manager.
Miss X is always sitting down, whilst i'm serving 3 customers at once! And she even watches! She watched me today serve 2 customers, do changing room duty and listen to customer complaints. I asked her for a hand, she gets up, does the minimal task, as in, does the least amount to get by, then sits back down - all infront of the manager. And the manager is fine with this.

Everyone in the store feels my anger. 7 people complained to the manager and asked why does Miss X get away with everything. The manager's response "it's difficult, she's my mate!"

a lot of people are really fed up with it. So instead of complaining to the manager, today I confronted Miss X. I asked her literally
"Why don't you get up and do some work. We need you on the shop floor" Her response was "Nah i'm doing something"
I asked "What"
and she says "I'm doing something for the manager" when infact she was sitting in the stock room eating a mince pie.
So I asked her "How come you get away with anything?"
And she goes "Oh it's difficult The manager is my mate. She doesn't let me do anything." But infact, I know she's just damn right lazy too!

It's not as if i'm unhappy there. It's just this really annoying thing and I know it will never go.

As a result, i've taken an extreme measure - ish! I'm contracted to work Saturdays only, and not Sundays. However i've been doing Sundays overtime since Sept. It's become the norm. Tomarrow (Sunday) 5 new workers are due to come in. It's my duty to teach them the ins and outs of what to do. I deliberitly told the manager I don't wish to work overtime Sundays anymore. So she asks other people and they don't want to work Sundays either due to the whole Miss X thing and wanting to get the message across to the manager.

Now tomarrow, it's going to be the Manager, Ass Manager, and the 5 new people running the store! It's going to be well busy too! I think i'll pop in just to see how they're doing! :D

Sorry for the long post but at least it's out now!

Then call the police!

Sheesh, man, how many people has she killed and why are you posting about it here rather than calling the police?

I have a similar-ish problem at my place- there's a couple of people do absolutely nothing and the line manager does nothing because she's too soft.

I just ignore it- I get on with my work at my own speed, in the long term people like that always get shown up.

Failing that, go higher up? Report it to head office or something?

You said the store's big? Spike her drink and feed her hair into the escalator and watch her SCREEEEEEAAAAM! Muahahahahahahaharrr!

I would only do anything if was resulting in you having to stay over hours to finish work off. If this is the case I would down tools when I was supposed to and just leave them to finish it off.

If it's getting to you that much, then go above the managers head to the regional manager or whatever the equivalent is in JD's hierarchy.

It would be better to find out your work complaints procedure. All big companies will have one in place. Then just escalate it within the procedures.

Tell the regional manager!
If enough of the staff say the same thing they'll have to look into it, see if you can have a word with the assistant manager to get him on side as well, his word will have a bit more clout which is a plus.
