What would you do next?

Laptop, Vista, never really been put on the internet.

Put on the internet, Windows Update does it's stuff
Restarts
Then Internet Explorer refuses to load.
The iexplore.exe process is running, but no active application.

Installation of firefox throws up exactly the same error - process runs, but nothing appears.

What would you do next?

Try safe mode with networking?

Disable any AV/FW?

Re-install.
As soon as you get underlying problems like that, a re-install is a must. you might fix that problem but the chances are something is pretty corrupt and it'll keep throwing up errors.

if its fine in safe mode with networking, then theres a program/process thats blocking the browser from showing up.

with trial and error should be pretty simple to find which one

Go into msconfig and disable all startup items and non MS services.

try creating a new user account and using that.

failing that, format with Vista SP1 dvd
