What Would You Do?

GeForce GTX 1080 HerculeZ Twin X2 8192MB GDDR5X £550.

Not outrageous for a launch price. I would prefer to wait for price to come down but I have to pick a card up sooner than later.

But as locken86 mentions cheap fast stop gap may be some fun. Wait until I get put under more pressure from my son, which will come soon enough.

Odd choice this time round, normally simpler when both teams are competing with cards roughly in the same performance bracket.

I would go 480 I've got a feeling in my water AMD will have a hit on their hands this time round.

Save your money for whatever comes later in the year/2017.

The 1070 looks perfectly positioned for 1440p so it's not exactly a 'stop gap' at that resolution. However, if you've got your sights on a 1080Ti somewhere down the line, you're probably better off getting a RX 480 in the meantime.

I would think a 1070 would hold it's value quite well though (assuming you don't get the Milky Milky Founders edition). Or when the time comes, just pass the 1070 on to your son to blow up :)

1440p for me and 1080 for my kid. I will be sticking at 1440 res. for a while as its a colour accurate monitor. 4k colour accurate gaming monitor at a reasonable price tag is a while away I think.

GTX 1070 more expensive than I would want to pay for a stop gap card. 480 I suspect would be fine price wise. Performance wise unless some surprise we do not know, not so exciting.

1080 at £550 I think the price is rich but I would bite.

Thinking if I see a 1080 I like come down slightly in price to the £550 mark get it or go with a 480 if not and wait.

Thing that puts me off waiting is that the red and green team release at eye-watering prices.

Pay a bit more for a monster but pricing is becoming a bit of an issue for me.

the 480 isnt going to be expensive at all for 165£ the 4go version and a 192£ 8Go version, that is quite low pricing, it should be at least 390 level of performance, if lucky 10-15%% faster.
the 1070 is about 40% faster than your 390 for 350£.
it's up to you to judge if you are fine with the overall level of performance you have for the next 6 months, or if you need more.

Or when the time comes, just pass the 1070 on to your son to blow up :)

Fate of all my cards. I do have a rather nice collection of very expensive paperweights on my bookcase though (expensive & attractive custom fan is important for this afterlife I find:rolleyes:).

1900xt is the only one so far that proved kid proof, fired it up a few weeks ago still works.

poor kid he always gets 2nd hand GPU statisticaly he is at a disadvantage :D

Yes its sad. But if a five month old 390 lags with his water-cooled and over-clocked core I5 running Doom, I am sure I have a copy of hallo kitty goes roller-blading that belonged to his older sister so its not all bad!

Op just get a custom 1070, quite a lot faster than your 390 for a reasonable price (compared to the 1080). It will lose a lot less value than the 1080 too when the 1080Ti comes. Actually, the 970 stayed the same price when the 980Ti came out because the Ti cards are in a much higher price bracket.

The 1070 will be a good match for your 1440p monitor. I would imagine if it's a colour accurate monitor that it's 60Hz too? If so that's more reason to go 1070 rather than 1080.

If they keep jacking the price every time they release a card that is 'faster' than what's currently available, then the 1280 will probably be about £1000.

And you'll be ok with this because it is 'faster'?

The 1080 is a mid range part at a high end price.

It's nice to see a mid ranged card like the 1070 beating the high end 980ti / Titan cards.

This mid range card labelling seems rather silly. Bottom line is it's currently the top end card. In 3/6 months time there will be another top end card, the cycle continues.

After reading all this thread and the fact that you are on 1440P I would go RX480 8GB as it will be great card for not a lot of cash. Then that will give you time to watch the market for the 1080's to come down or to wait for price of 1080Ti/Vega. The 480 will not lose much in price if you want to sell it on or you could pass it on to your son and sell the 390....either way I think you will both be happy.

1070 is too expensive for a stop gap and 1080 will drop a bit when Vega 11 comes out near or just after Xmas.
:)

That sounds like a plan! I may well just stick with the mid end and forget about high end cards if recent pricing is going to become the trend.

I have enough money saved to pick up one of the higher priced 1080's but just not prepared to spend it. One at £550 would be a compromise.

Large chunk of cash to part with and not get what you want.

Good choice, you really are buying a mid range card with the 1080. Get something cheap and cheerful to tide you over until the true high end cards appear.

It's faster because it's next gen. Why can't people understand this?

I don't care what they call a card. The 256bit bus means it is a cut down version being sold for a 384bit price.

If the pricing trend continues then we aren't that far from having to pay £1000 for a new video card.

People on here just seem to have the attitude of 'oh I have the money so why the hell not'. Nvidia love people like this and keep jacking up the price.

I have the money to buy a 1080 no problem, but I have an inbuilt aversion to being ripped off.

Honestly 1080 only seems a bit faster than 980TI - is it worth the money; with the other big cards just around the corner? No; why 480 at its price at least for this case. For other cases it could be argued yes.....

That's how inflation works.

A Golf GTI in 1996 didn't cost as much as a Golf GTI now in 2016. Houses in the 90's didn't cost as much as houses now.

There's no reason technology would be exempt.

That's not inflation. What nvidia have done with the 1080 is totally different. They have priced it like a top end card because it's the fastest available at this moment in time. They will be happy to crush the price when they release the ti version, knowing that it will become immediately redundant.

Just look at the 980. When the 980ti released, who was buying a 980? They couldn't even sell them at the reduced price let alone the release price. It was, and still is a struggle to sell a 980 second hand. Yet the 970 continued to sell like hot cakes.

The price of the 1080 has got nothing to do with inflation. The card exists for 3 very shrewd reasons:

1. Make the 1070 look like a tremendous bang for buck alternative.
2. Make the 1080ti look like a tremendous bang for buck upgrade/alternative.
3. Squeeze as much cash as possible during its 6-9 months on the throne.

The irony of all the justification posts in this forum, is that by their very nature the people who post them really should know better. ;)
