What would you do?

I would have offered the £500 for repair, but on hearing the request for the brand new one I would have withdrew my offer and left him deal with it.

The cat could've bumped the glass of water, that's why insurance companies exist.

Lol wut?

What if he's not happy with the £1600 laptop, get him the full spec £2500 one?

Yeah, it's only money, however if you make a point that IF you do that you won't talk to him ever again, it makes the point that it's the last time he makes a quid of you.

It's "only" £1,600?

So you think £1600 is enough to completely screw up the relationship? She *did* screw up the laptop and the guy is left with none, so paying for repairs is fine...

My point is that if he insists of being greedy, pay the guy, and write him off. That'll probably save you money in the long run anyway.

No, he wouldn't be making money out of me in the first place. There are cheaper ways to make a point.

Pft
Just go onto CEX/Ebay and buy one of the many Mac book pros they have for £500-600
If he doesn't want 2nd hand, then screw him. He cant expect a brand new one for an accident.
If he refuses, cut all communication with him and leave him with nothing.

Wow. These are exactly the sort of people from the fable who would kill the golden goose looking for more eggs.

I might, if I felt truly responsible, buy them a replacement. I would expect them to be pretty grateful that I did so. But what I'd really expect is that if they're going to buy something that valuable they have insurance and use it. I pranged a neighbour's car once. But honestly, the moment they started trying to get £1,600 out of me for an old Mac, they'd be in serious danger of losing even the offer to replace it. Quite frankly, I find it absurd that it should either cost that much to repair or that it can't be "repaired" (dried out) at home for nothing. Did it seriously never work again? Not to be cynical but I'd be very inclined to believe they're trying to get something for nothing and will either claim on the insurance anyway or try to sell the old one as well. I normally give people the benefit of the doubt but they sound greedy.

Is your sister well off / they think of her as well off? It just sounds like they think of her as a source of money for themselves.

I thought the offer was £500.

Surely paying the repair fee would be the fair answer. Regardless of what you value the item, someone broke the lads laptop when using it without permission. The repair should come out of the sister of the lad AND your sister just to get the laptop to the condition it was before with his files and stuff. If £800 is too much, then go to a third party repair place but bit harsh for the kid now he is down one laptop and didn't even have any part of the incident. Yeah family are knobs for asking for a new one but really it should be up to the kid to decide whether the offer was okay or not and live with the consequences, rather than his try-their-luck parents.

They refused the offer of enough to buy a replacement of the same age and spec and instead went full money grabbing and demanded 3 times the amount for a brand new one.
I don't think anyone would say the initial offer was unreasonable and they thoroughly deserved to end up with nothing with that attitude.

Some people are just greedy :(

Why replace a second hand laptop with a brand new one just because of an accident??

I'd offer to pay for repairs or a replacement second hand model (whichever is cheapest).

But really, this is what home insurance is for.

If £500 got him the same replacement, then the replacement and an apology is a good offer. What i am saying is that giving nothing to the lad because HIS FAMILY refuse is a bit harsh. Would ignore whatever his family say and go straight to him and offer it, if he doesnt want it then he has made his own choice and can live with it. Allowing the family to refuse the offer for him and making him live with the result is harsh imo.
