What would you have done? - junk mail

Interested to get others opinions, please don't all jump on my head if you disagree with my actions, it's just made me wonder what others would do.

Went to put some rubbish in my dustbin yesterday, and noticed some papers in the bottom, upon further investigation I discovered it was 20+ bundles of junk mail (3 different leaflets packaged up together) that had been dumped in my bin.

Rang Royal Mail who duly took my address and phone number and said they would pass it on to the sorting office manager because I felt it wasn't on for them to have been dumped in my bin.

They phoned me this morning and are coming to my house tomorrow morning because (in their words) "they take this sort of thing seriously" and want to take a witness statement.

I stated I did not want anyone losing their job, just that it wasn't really on for that amount of junk mail to be put in my bin. I said if he or she hadn't wanted to carry it, then they could have put it in my recycling bin instead.

However i've had a few people criticizing me for "dobbing them in." The way I see it is that the post man/lady didn't do their job properly and if I didn't do my job properly i'd be in trouble. What's to say they don't start dumping people's mail next?

Be interested to see what others would have done in my position?

might be a good idea to switch to electronic billing and banking as i suspect your postal service may not be as reliable as once it was from now on :p

For what it is worth you did the right thing. There is a great deal of trust implied in the Postal service and that trust is needed for good reason. It is not for the person chucking the stuff to determine what is important or not. It is not your job to tidy up their laziness (although in fairness they did that themselves :p).

The don't grass mentality in this country I find rather strange.

Don't expect any Christmas cards this year for sure :)

Yeah i wouldn't go as far as "dobbing them in" but whats done is done... Someone will probably get told off, maybe sacked. ... Shame id love it if my postman dumped this crap :( lucky you.

See people have said that, "expect poo through the letter box now" but again I don't see why I should have to be on the receiving end of that because someone didn't do their job properly. :)

I'd have been less annoyed if he put it in my recycling, its like he or she has been sneaky and put it in my dustbin.

Seems a bit harsh to report them, seeing it hasn't affected my day much, it wasn't important stuff etc.

But that's just me, we're all different.

edit: to clarify, I was once employed in the business of putting together "mail shots" eg junk mail, so I know how crap the stuff is, and how time consuming and arduous it is for the person delivering it. Also, if they were happy to come round and get details, you know they're taking it seriously, and that some poor sod is in for a bad week/sacking.

This happened in plymouth a few years back some dude found some mail in a bin and when the royal mail investigated they found the mail women has been collecting the mail from the sorting office and just going home with the mail. On further investigation they found her house full of undelivered.

Lol Jesus that is HARSH... Properly screwing up peoples lives/plans naughty woman ! :D

How did you figure out it was RM fault and not someone else's junk mail, addressed to you?

Cos it's 20+ separate bundles of three types of leaflets, one for a local garden centre, a dominoes pizza one and a Virgin media leaflet. When they asked me this morning on the phone what the leaflets were, they confirmed that was from them.

I sometimes get letters and even parcels delivered incorrectly to me. If I don't know where their houses are, I'll re-post them and copy/paste the address in big letters. If it's a parcel, I'll take it to the post office and they can re-post it at no cost.

Slade2 - good post. Reporting Knip (the OP's) post man could reveal more upon an investigation.

I’d have reported this as well. For one I wouldn’t want all of this in my bin, secondly some lazy bugger probably isn’t doing their job properly and thirdly because real mail may be going astray.
