What would you have done?

Probably wouldn't have done anything unless the child was in distress. Also worried about getting accused of being a child snatcher!

No chance. I always think of the ocuker who was wrongly labled as a pedo

When/who was that?

Very different from when I was that age - one day we were performing a mock hanging of a close friend outside my house only to have an elderly couple pull up in their car and forcibly stop us. Good times :p

Ahh but was it a mock hanging which would have turned into a real hanging if the people didn't intervene, but you were too young to realise? :p

Last night on the way I home, about 7pm, I turned the corner and saw a small girl on her own running down a road, a quick glance around and I couldn't see any adults.

In my head, I said "What is she doing out on her own at this time of night?"

Given the area it was, it isn't that unusual to see young children out in the street.

Now I did consider stopping but then in my head I thought to myself do I really won't to stop and talk to a child while I am in a bit white van given the pitch fork generation we are currently living in.

Now roll on to 10pm and it turn out the girl had left home and the first the parents knew about it was when the police turned up to arrest them.

So I feel a little guilty that this child was wandering the streets for about three hours and I drove by.

So, OcUK, would you have stopped?

I think that's the tragedy of our current society. People are so afraid of being seen as a paedophile or an abductor or whatever, that they're afraid to interact with children at all. And I don't mean found guilty of these things, I do mean simply being seen as such is enough of a worry. This is especially true for men which is a problem as it keeps men out of a lot of roles such as teaching young children where I think the children would benefit from having more good male role-models.

That is the one area of society that really is sexist (or rather, prejudiced) against men.

I bet a woman would have no issues stopping to help, and nobody would think twice. It really is a stigma we now have.

Am I the only one wondering why the police turned up to arrest the parents?

First thing that crossed my mind when I read this. Why were they arrested?

Depends on the age of the kid and the area I guess. It's not so unusual to see 5+ year olds running round here in the evening.

No, it is AN area of society that is sexist. There are others as well. Sexism harms society whichever sex is the victim.

I understand exactly what was probably going through your head OP, i had a similar experience a while back but not involving a child.

I was driving down a road where i am from and around 100 yards in front of me a middle aged woman was crossing the road with her dog, i little terrier type, she then continued up a street just off the road i was driving along.

Now as i got to where she crossed a bloke came walking the opposite way up the road i was driving down, also walking a dog, the dog was a pitbull type and he was what as i would describe as a U WHAT M8 type, the dog was yanking his shoulder out of his socket and foaming at the mouth, looking very aggressive etc and walking approximately 50 ish yards behind the woman with her little dog.

So i am thinking to myself if she stops for some reason then the guy and his dog will be very close to her and i just had an image of her dog and possibly her seriously injured if that pitbull gets anywhere near her, so i turned up the street and caught up just behind her, she looked around at me so i said, hi, i am just making sure you get where you are going ok, me presuming she had seen the pitbull around 50 yards behind her, she looked at me funny and about 20 yards further she opened a front gate to a garden and on into the house, i thought ok great, atleast she is home and I thought nothing of it again and continued on.

I stopped at a co-op shop further down the round and it was busy so i was in there around ten minutes, when i came out there was two police cars around my car and 4 police officers, i thought wtf, i walked over and one of them said is this your car, i said yes, as soon as i said yes i was cuffed and arrested and in the back of a police car.

So i asked one of them in the car what have i done, she said a woman had phoned 999 and reported that she had been stalked by a man and gave them my car reg etc, i was sat there in shock :)

In the end i told them what i was actually doing and the woman came down with an officer and they told her what i said, she only believed the story because she said as she was looking through her window and on the phone to the police she said she did notice a guy walk past her house with an aggressive looking dog.

So, never again will i stop :)

That's a weird reason to stop IMO...

You assumed his dog was aggressive based on how the owner looked and because his dog was foaming at the mouth.

Dogs do sometimes pull on the lead and sometimes because of this they do have foaming mouths. Or maybe it was a hot day. That would cause panting and foaming.

Either way, unless you can see in to the future there's no way you should have assumed the woman or her dog were in any danger.

I know an aggressive dog when i see one, it was obvious it was pulling him to get closer to her and her dog, i would have thought most would have thought similar to me in that the pitbull really wanted to get to her dog.

The highlighted bit above, no **** Sherlock, and why should i have not assumed her or her dog where not in any danger? It was my gut feeling so i acted on it, no harm done was there?

Also, **** all to do with hot weather as it was November.

e: I forgot to add, the police and I had a good laugh about it in the end and one of them said fair play, they could understand what i was thinking but they could also understand what the woman thought i was doing.

I'd be interested to hear offence you were arrested for.
