Couldn't care less. As a developer, it's pretty much talent that matters and thus your results of uni quickly fade after a couple of years of actually doing things. It's a shame not everyone universally feels the same.

It's kinda flawed how this works then, I mean what's the point of going to somewhere like Warwick when you get the same chance at a graduate scheme if you go somewhere like London Southbank/Met

The degree opens the metaphorical door, after that it's up to you to demonstrate your qualities to the people assessing you. You can get good candidates from bad universities and vice versa - the quality of the university doesn't necessarily have a direct bearing on how good they'll be at the job.

Much rather have a 2:2 from Oxford than a 2:1 from London Met. I think I would take a 2:2 from Oxford over a 1st from London Met

Poll added, it's a difficult question though. I think I'd probably take the 2:2 from Oxford but that's principally because of the other opportunities that I suspect I would get from going to Oxford. However if the universities were more closely matched and it was say a middle-tier ranked university then I'd take the 2:1.

As some other have said a degree is often simply a way to prove that you can learn up to a certain level and a way for you to access options more easily than otherwise. In some ways it's a shorthand for employers to be aware that you've probably got YY level of ability and it roots out a number of candidates who don't meet that requirement. It doesn't prove that you'll be good but it's an easy substitute to thoroughly testing you themselves.

As it is I've got a degree from a university that doesn't have a particularly great reputation, the course itself that I did isn't too bad though as it's ranked as the best modern university in Scotland for it. That wasn't even a consideration when I went there though as I went for a different course but looking back I'm fairly happy with the way things turned out. For the little it is worth the graduate scheme I was on has entrance requirements of a 2:2.

//edit hold on a second, I'll sort that poll out. :o

Sent you trust. :)

I have a degree and masters and ive never been asked my classifications at interview. Plus, certain academic departments are more respected than others irrespective of the university.

I went to a top 10 uni, hated it, so I transferred to Hull where I never looked back. Politics at Hull was a surprisingly challenging experience. I don't think the lecturers compromised on standards just because we were an unfashionable institution. The opposite in fact.

I never went to university, College was as far as i needed to go for my career choice.

However if i had continued, i would probably have ended up at Nottingham. so i'd take the 2:1.

A few years of experience down the line and all things being equal, people still get filtered by uni grades.

Nonsense. This is simply not the case. As far as most employers (good) are concerned, once you're in, you're in. It's ability in service that counts more than what you got at uni 4 years ago.....

My employer never even verified my grades!!! :D

That's not nonsense, but then it totally depends on your own definition of a 'good' employer.

Tough one, nowadays a higher grade probably opens up that initial door for you, but long run the 'better' uni (and its associated old boys club) could be more beneficial.

I got a 2:2 from a decent uni, albeit over 10 years ago, and whilst I wouldn't have been able to get on many of the grad schemes others may have wanted to its never really affected my career choices.

I'm currently working somewhere coming in as an experienced hire that is a popular place for grads and am probably only a year or two behind where I'd have been as a grad entry if at all.

Me too. I got a 2:1 from Oxford Brookes old poly in applied geology and whilst it got me onto the first run of the ladder if it were anything but a very specialized subject I'd 100% go for they worse grade from proper Oxford.

It still opens doors going to Oxbridge.

Polls are quite interesting with the majority would rather have 2:2 from Oxford. It doesn't really London Met has been in the news in a negative light regarding international students but I'd pick the 2:1 from London Met just so I would have a better chance at the grad scheme.
