i was going to buy a 290x gfx because its not much worse than a 780ti and a lot cheaper and i was going to get the powercolor card which comes with free ram so even a better bonus but i'm new to pc and from what i've heard nvidia drivers are better or more developed than amd drivers.

so i just wanted pros and cons of both camps and which would be easier to setup to a nooby like me?

i would be playing games like dayz/cs:go/crisis/bf4/cod etc

Nvidia all the way, they are faster, better drivers, reduce the greenhouse effect and save dolphins. They also cost more money and quality doesn't come cheap does it?

This should go well..

OP, they're both more than capable cards. Question is, do you want to pay the premium for a slightly faster card and enjoy PhysX. Or do you want to pay less for a slightly slower card which has Mantle, albeit in it's infancy.

Oh dear, another 5 page argument is about to begin!

i didn't mean to cause any aruging by posting this thread just wanted to learn what would be better for me as i'm a noob at this stuff, i just wouldnt want to buy a graphics card then have it have bad driver support or something else so just wanted other peoples opnions, if amd have good drivers then i'm going to get 290x but if the drivers suck then i'll side with green.

AMD will be your better value option, especially with the free ram. Nvidia costs more but does have its own ecosystem of features and is typically seen as the "easier" experience in terms of you just plug n play but AMD has come a long way in that respect too :)

i don't want to pay the premium tbh and if amd is more than capable of playing my games i'd buy amd's card all day, if i end up going nvidia, i'll probably go balls to the walls and buy the rog swift monitor and be skint til next payday haha, too many choices :P

I had amd years ago had nothing but problems with drivers, games would crash at the worst times possible. Since switching to nvidia I have never had an issue and don't think I will ever go back.

AMD had bad driver support maybe....2-3 years ago? Maybe longer.

I never really had an issue with my 6870 to be honest.

Their drivers are fine now, they do regular updates. I have a 290x and it works fine.

Nothing wrong with the Nvidia, though I'd favour the extra V-ram on the 290x for slightly better 'future proofing'

And i'm not talking about 4k resolutions, as neither the R9 290x or Nvidia 780Ti is good enough to run that in a single configuration IMO.

If you like ubisoft games, then Nvidia would be a better choice. (although ubisoft treats pc gamers like sxxt)
If you like the great future that Mantle has, go for 290.

Why won't the 'bad AMD drivers' thing die already? That's going back further than the Nvidia 500-series but everybody has already forgotten about how hot those ran.

AMD is 100% fine. Nvidia is 100% fine. AMD is cheaper for the same performance. Nvidia overcharge because they have realised people will still pay. Logically- ignore brand loyalty, go with the cheaper option, get yourself the free RAM deal and then either save the money or put it towards something else good in your build.

AMD drivers are fine and updated more often than Nvidia ones....

The question is always

a) Are you willing to pay premium for an Nvidia
b) Are you thinking to go to 4K with that GPU?

The answer on A is subjective always. Every single person in here has an opinion for what they like (like religion or a football team) and a list of cons against the others.

As cards go, AMD make more sense because they are as powerful, by far cheaper and come with goodies.

So comes to B.

If you plan to go down the route to multi GPU solution to have the best 4K experience, get either. AMDs are cheaper to do that also. (and have better bus and more VRAM)

If however you are in a stop-gap graphic card, and you plan to buy a 4K monitor and see how the future unfolds, get an Nvidia and a 4K monitor with GSync module.
The reason is that low fps (all way to 30), will be smoothed out by the Gsync module, and then you see how things unfold with a future upgrade.

Regarding Mantle, you should only consider it in the Pros-Cons list to make your mind, if you have AMD CPU. If you have Intel i5 or better, ignore that exists. (you will benefit yes, but not as much as with an AMD Cpu).

As for PhysX, 8 years in the market and rarely we see more than ONE good game PER YEAR that support it. And haven't played a game that support PhysX since forever, even if almost always had an Nvidia card.
But when is support it................

Hope I helped.

So all in all, price/performance wise get the AMD. Cannot be beaten.

There are no hard and fast "Nvidia v AMD" rules - it's very much like asking for pros and cons of "Mercedes v BMW" or "Ford v Vauxhall".

The days of one companies drivers being better than the other are VERY long gone - I've not had this situation in at least 4 years so don't worry about this kind of out of date hearsay.

Rather than look at the manufacturer of the card, you're much better off looking at your budget and what you use the card for. If I was looking for a card at £300 for mainly Battlefield 4, I'd get a 290/290X as this will perform better. If I was looking at the same price and mainly played COD or Batman, then I'd get a 780 as this will perform better. If I had £100 to spend and played a variety of games, then I'd get the AMD R9 270, but if you're looking to upgrade an off-the-shelf system for this price, you'd be better off with an Nvidia 750ti as it's easier on the PSU so you're less likely to need up upgrade this too.

If you want the absolute best, then get the 780ti. If you'd prefer to do something else with the £100ish saving, then get the 290X. Both are awesome cards and will do you proud for many years at 1080p or even 1440p. What's the rest of your PC spec and budget? Just want to make sure you're not saddling a £400 GPU with a £50 CPU+PSU combination! :)

both are good,

issues i've seen recently is:

a few 200 owners on the forum experiencing black screens or BSOD's
780 owners getting slow performance in SLI or wanting more vram

both have good and bad

This a nvidia forum so things will be bit biased. :p

As above ignore the driver bull crap, look at the pros and cons of the features they offer. Will you be playing more games with PhysX? Then nvidia. Will you be playing games that use Mantle then amd.

There the two biggest features atm, almost everything else is the same.

This ^^^

AMD or Nvidia have the same performance and the same Driver reliability, they also have different feature sets in equal amounts and partnerships with Game Developers.

Nvidia are with Ubisoft while AMD are with EA....

They are equal. one costs a lot less.

You answered your own question, you don't want to pay a premium for a card so AMD is your answer and from the games you listed i would choose AMD over Nvidia for that easily.

AMD drivers are no where near as bad as they were years ago and just as good as Nvidia drivers today and infact are updated quicker and more frequently.

Though i would opt for a 290 over a 290x your talking like 7% performance difference give or take in most games unless you think it's worth the extra 80-100 pounds extra.
