What would you recommend I upgrade first?

Hi, in short my rig is

i5-4690K (3.5ghz)
8GB DDR3 (2666Mhz)
Nvidea GTX 970

I mostly use it for gaming and editing videos (gopro movies in powerdirector).

What would you recommend should be the first thing to upgrade? Where is the "weak link"?

Thanks.

P.S. I am not looking to overclock anything. I wan't to avoid that at this stage. Yes I realise im speaking to people who probably do this on a daily basis and I see the irony of saying that in "overclockers forum". But Im not looking to do that at this stage.

what is your budget? I will be tempted for a GPU upgrade if gaming is your primary use. Another 8gb ddr3 ram will be good and it is very cheap these days.

Would it not make sense to upgrade the motherboard in the long run? I know it would mean replacing the ram and cpu at the same time but if you are going to upgrade them anyway why not get DDR4 Ram etc?

Because Skylake is ridiculously priced and offers bugger all over a 4690k.

Beany bot, welcome to the forums. :)

What res do you game at and what make and models are your psu and motherboard? If you don't have a ssd then that would be a good buy. Other than that I don't see anything wrong with what you have apart from you spent extra for a k series cpu but don't want to overclock it (banable offence on here!! :D:D:D).

Don't have SSD. more RAM would be affordable certainly. I would be a little hesitant to upgrade the GPU just puerly as it is quite a big expense. (Is there much money in selling my 970 second hand?).

As for my motherboard, this is some more detail about my rig. I think the motherboard is half decent. (had my friend help me pick the items for my build).

hahah. I know! I specifically picked the CPU with the knowledge I "can" overclock in the future. just too scared at the moment. Most important thing for me is a stable, reliable rig.

I game at 1080, 60hz.
Same with my video editing, 1080p at 60FPS

Yeah nothing "wrong" with my rig just now. just had it a few months now and starting to get "itchy feet" so to speak. Want to treat it to something new :)

Thanks.

Can't see the image you've posted (work internet blocks certain hosts).

Your rig looks fine, 8GB is normally good enough but another 8GB is cheap and will help with video editing. An SSD would be a very good investment and by lee's comment a better PSU if it's bad?

OK guys appreciate the advice. Im going to get another 8GB of RAM (same speed) at this time with a view to getting an SSD in the Jan sales.

I'm a bit hesitant about getting an SSD just because of the fact of reinstalling everything :( but I've heard so many times it's the way to go I will heed your advice.

Corsair Builder CX 600W V2 is the psu.

Get the SSD first, 500gb SSD for £99 on black Friday OCuk sales apparently. Also a cheap and cheerful cpu cooler just because stock is noisy when working hard.

If you wanted a big framerate jump, a second 970 but thats overkill for 1080p imo.

You don't have to reinstall, can just clone the existing HDD ;)

It will be worth getting it.

OK SSD it is! I like the cloning idea. will read up on that. I do have a GTX 950 in my work computer that could "not be missed"....if that would make a difference? Can you mix and match cards like that? I will have to read up on SLI too. Really appreciate the advice.

Not wishing to go off topic but just how the hell does SLI actually work?
Do the cards talk to each other and say "OK, I'll deal with the lighting and AA here, you take the textures and water" "oh the water is getting a bit much for me, your not doing to much, fancy doing the water too?"

Just how does it work so well. Quite impressive really.

I'm hoping to get the Occulus rift when the consumer product is ready. I believe this will double the workload on the GPU as it is asking for two different images to be rendered at the same time, so I think a good time to "SLI" would be when I get the Occulus. (If I can afford all that!)
