What would you upgrade of this setup?

So I’ve got some cash finally, enough to get a motherboard and CPU.

I’ve got £350. Looking at this CPU:

I’m after the smallest motherboard I can get, so mini-ITX.

Could you guys make a recommendation?

You can pick up the standard 3600 ~£180 and is far superior value than the X which has negligible gains.

Do you need memory too within that £350?

If you don't need the memory the MSI B550M with cashback works out ~£100 - and has added advantage of PCIe 4.0 and priority Zen3 support (for possible upgrades) over the B450 although the MSI B450M is great value @ £85 and will have Zen3 support in January.

My setups less than that and it’s still fast, the main question is what is it you use it for or what is it you are having issues with that you thing it needs an upgrade? Or are you wanting to upgrade because everyone else is?

(he may not need it though).

...and lesser VRMs. I actually prefer MSI with the cashback. Not sure why they held back on the Elite mITX version.

Would I need to get memory? I thought I’d just use what I have already, which is DDR3. No idea if it’s back compatible. I’d upgrade this in due course either way.

I also don’t know what the X means...I’d appreciate suggestions on best overall bag for my buck with or without memory.

Just gaming. The PC I have is alright but I’m finding tougher to play the games in enjoy at decent frame rates. I’ve got the money to start upgrading now so I’m going ahead with it.

Well obviously I’ve only been playing the releases ones, but yeah I’d like Valhalla to run beautifully.

so right now I’m thinking the 3600 and the b550 mortar (https://www.overclockers.co.uk/msi-...am4-b550-micro-atx-motherboard-mb-35f-ms.html) and ill put my old RAM etc in for now

Hold off there’s a new gen soon, prices will drop shortly.

You got access to the MM? Plenty parts been sold there if you can’t wait. Means you get it cheaper.

New gen for which components?

I do have access to the MM but I’d like the core parts to come with a warranty.

The next gen Ryzen CPUs and boards. For the last 15 years I have never purchased any components new. Never once had a component fail yet. It can happen don’t get me wrong but if you want brand new that’s fair doos.

Ah OK. Do we have any ideas of when they’ll be released. I’m impatient but willing to wait if it’ll save me quite a few quid on the new stuff

Wont save you on new stuff but it will on the current gen once the new stuff gets released the price will drop.
