What would you upgrade of this setup?

I think so but what I’m telling you is the current gen you are looking at will drop in price so you will save. The new stuffs due out around Nov 5th.

I could do that, and I understand what you’re saying. I’ll have to weigh up whether I want the newest kit or a lower price, or somewhere in between.

thanks for the heads up

I would wait 4 weeks, stick a list together and watch the price drop.

That’s a good idea. If I’m patient enough to wait until Christmas, I’ll also be able to get a bunch more components.

The one thing that really concerns me is the GPU. Man those things are expensive. That I will more than likely be hitting up the MM for

Would I need to get memory? I thought I’d just use what I have already, which is DDR3. No idea if it’s back compatible. I’d upgrade this in due course either way.

I also don’t know what the X means...I’d appreciate suggestions on best overall bag for my buck with or without memory
You would need to factor in the cost of memory.

The B450/B550 use DDR4 ~£60/£70 for 16GB 3200/3600MHz (Crucial Ballastix)

The X/XT is an overpriced suffix/variant of the standard 3600 - with negligible gains for the money

Prices may not go down straight away due to release availability (unknown) and that the 5000 series is more expensive than people expected. In fact prices of the 3000 series have stabilised and even gone up. You could pick up a 3600 for £160 a month ago - now average at ~£180/£190 - this may not change very quickly even with the 5000 release. They will eventually go down but probably not a knee jerk drop...

Do you have to use DDR4? Could I get away with DDR3 for the time being? That’s interesting about the price fluctuations. All depends how twitchy I get for something new I guess!!

For your £350 you could get:

  • MSI B550M Mortar ~£100 with cashback deal
  • 3600 ~£180
  • 16GB 3600MHz Cruical Ballistix £70
Great powerhouse bundle.

Or

@orbitalwalsh's Gigabyte Elite with free SSD deal + above combo.

Or, if you're in a position to wait a few months when next stack of CPUs get released - and prices will hopefully drop in response - buy then.

Cheers. Are the gigabyte elites all ATX or am I mistaken?

I think it’s £36 cash back btw

I doubt there will be much in the way of price cuts this time as the new CPUs cost considerably more so they don't need to cut prices on the old stuff.

Also because they are manufactured on the same node does this mean a cut in production for zen 2 which would also mean less supply.

No, you have the mITX Elite the format that you're after but it doesn't have the same quality VRMs as it's ATX counterparts or the MSI Mortar - but will do the job (and no WiFi):

Yes, it is - but these promotions can change so will always give approximations.

The MSI for ref:

Thanks. My impatience is an issue here. I’m not convinced I’ll be able to afford the brand new stuff but maybe I should be more patient.

very close to pulling the trigger on the MSI Mortar, 3600, and 16GB crucial ballistix

Swings and roundabouts to degree.

That motherboard cashback deal is good - and the 3600 will take months to drop to ~£140 for comparative saving with cashback. Plus, memory is cheap at the moment...

As long as you're upgrading for the right reasons - it's not a bad time to dip your toe in. The quality B550M Mortar will furnish any future Zen 3 upgrades and the 3600 CPU is still a mighty unit for the money if you get it for ~£175 and is a great place holder for Zen 3 in a couple of years time if needed...
