what wats over that required for the system would result in damage to the system?

example.
system requires 400 wats would a 450-550 psu damage the system

....or rubbing it on a carpet, dropping it from a building, dipping it in a tub of iron filings etc ;)

As stated, Motherboards will only take as much power as it needs so it makes no difference how much 'over powered' the CPU is. As a side note though you are advised getting the best PSU you can afford as a quality PSU with a high power rating will see you through many future upgrades and will outlast the rest of your system so it is money well spent imo.

“Remember it’s a sin to kill a motherboard.” That was the only time I ever heard Atticus say it was a sin to do something, and I asked Miss Maudie about it.
“Your father’s right,” she said. “Motherboards don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy . . . but sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a motherboard.”

Overclocking a power hungry processor, or even just using one the board isn't rated for, can burn out the cpu vrms. Spilling liquid pro into the cpu socket will do it too.

I vouch for overclocking excessivly, I killed my board yesterday in this manner, lovely burnt vrms. Replace it with something with more vrms that are cooled

Throwing acetone all over it and igniting it is also a good way to kill a motherboard.

I'd already whacked this one with a heavy hammer before setting it on fire but it's still a bad thing to do.
