Hi all,
Going car shopping with the brother at the weekend.
Mainly to look at Golf's and Civic's.

As far as I can tell the new style Civic came in around the end of 2005 - it's pretty obvious to see from the design etc.
Golf's however I'm not too sure about - not being a big fan myself I really couldn't tell one Golf Mk from another.

Brother's got around a £7k budget.
What kind of year/Mk Golf can he expect to find for that kind of cash?
Oh, should add not looking for GTI - something more "middle of the road".

I think the new shape Civic is 2006 onwards.

Are you looking at a petrol? The 1.8 petrol and 2.2 diesel in the civic are pretty decent.

Something like this maybe? http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2631446.htm

http://www.civinfo.com/ is a very good community for all civic related questions.

The golf is likely to be better build quality but i think you will have to get an older one, or a higher mileage one as the civics tend to be a bit cheaper.

I think (someone will likely confirm either way further in this thread) that virtually all petrol golfs in this price range are currently under recall for coil packs because they love to eat them.

at that price hed be looking at mk5 golf. he should be able to get an tidy 06/07 maybe an o8 if hes lucky but all depends on engine. is he after petrol or diesel

That's solid Mk5 Golf money. The current Mk6 is essentially a reskin on the same platform.

The Diesels engines are reliable if a bit gruff compared to the more modern common rail competition. The Petrols - well VW fitted just about everything they made to the damn thing, so we'd need more info.

He's currently driving a Bora with the 1.9TDI engine.
To be honest he's not doing the mileage to warrant the expense of a Diesel over a Petrol.
I think however he would miss the power if he went for anything smaller than a 1.8
It's the 1.8 and 2.2 Civic's we're also going to look at.

In my experience he'll likely find the Honda a bit "tinny" after VW Mk4 ownership.

Ignore the capacity and look at the power. VW replaced the (crap) 2.0FSI with a 1.4TSI which was more economical on fuel and the environment. There's a pile of different versions of it some with a turbo and supercharger (at the same time), later ones with just a turbo.

I've never driven the 1.8 Civic, but the general consensus was the the diesel is the vastly superior engine when I bought mine. The only positive about the petrol was that it was quite frugal.

at op price of 7k not many 1.4 tsi's come up though so might take a while to find the right one.

the other thing is that you see golf gtis come up for 7 with highish mileage at around 80-90k. im not too sure but would the difference in running costs between this and the normal 2.0 petrol golfs be big?

Not much else in the way of decent petrol engine options for that budget though. 2.0FSI is rare, 1.6FSI is only 115bhp and needs some stick to get the power out of it. It'd have to be a 140 TDI if it were my money and I couldn't stretch to a 1.4TSI or a GTI.

£7K as said, is solid Mk.V Golf money. It'll have a higher level of refinement than the Civic, but in terms of reliability, there's not a lot between them.

I believe the new Civic would have a choice of 1.4, 1.8, or 2.2D engines. You get circa the same power from the 1.8 and 2.2D options so it's really down to the miles you're planning on doing.

As for the Golf, there's a whole load of choice there from the 1.4 right up to the 2.0 and then there's the "twincharged" 1.4s to look at too, plus the diesels. Again, choice between them will be dictated by the intended usage. £7K is going to be down at the "ropey" end of the twincharged models, so i'd avoid those and look at either the 2.0TDI or the 2.0 petrol.

Thanks for the replies in this thread and my previous one from a month or so ago.
We went car shopping, no real intention of buying - but don't we all say that?
We came how with my brother putting a deposit on:

58 plate Civic 1.8SE in Blue Steel

41k miles, ex lease vehicle.
Full Honda service history and the balance (6 months) of Honda warranty.
One major little stone chip on the front which we'll get sorted as soon as he's picked the car up.
Just a shade over £7500.

Managed to get the place to give us £1400 for his old 51 plate, 121k miles Bora - so not a bad days work.
