WhatCar - 'VW Passat is Used Car of the Year'

I'll say another thing against the 2 litre Passat TDi. I'm sure it's very economical on motorways, especialy since it's got a 6 speed box. But I had one as a courtesy car, and on my 14 mile commute through smaller A roads and a bit of town driving I found it no more economical then a 2 litre petrol car.

Is it because you had less lower end power and had to rev it a bit high to get some go? I found the same on the 2.0 i drove as well.

Less lower end power on a TDI? Pull the other one.

Eh? I own a 1.9 130 PD TDI in an Ibiza FR and i've driven a few 2.0s albeit in a few heavier cars i suppose. Not saying theres no lower end power just seemed i had to give the 2.0 more beans to feel the power delivery.

As do I in the Fabia vRS. The 2.0TDI 140 in my Dad's Golf Plus is a bit more laggy but as long as the turbo is on boost (say 1500rpm) it's going to have loads more available torque than a comparable petrol engine. I'd expect at least a 10mpg difference between a 2.0 TDI and say the old 2.0 FSI.

Leaving aside the fact they picked the Vectra, a car so bad even Vauxhall wanted rid of the name, why on earth go for the 'Life' trm model? I mean, seriously?

Because owning one is like a life sentence...

What Car? has crowned the Volkswagen Passat the Used Car of the Year for 2009. A three-year-old Passat 1.9 TDI S costs a very tempting £7000 and was praised by the judges for its classy image, drivability and reliability.

Surely a Honda Accord 2.2 CDTi would meet that criteria as well as offering better reliability, driveability and performance?

They must have been seduced by the VW image.

They've picked out some real pieces of crap for their awards this year then :p ...who the hell comes up with this stuff ? ...utterly farcical!

Imagine how many people will read that stuff and actually 'believe' it too, I wager a worrying amount.
