What's a kernel panic and how do i fix it?

I run lubuntu and it was fine for ages but lately the laptop freezes and i get a boot screen showing kernel panic and something to do with it not syncing? :confused:

That's all i know, laptop freezes up and i get a black screen with white text saying kernel panic and some other stuff i doubt will be helpful.

The "other stuff" will be very helpfull as it tells us why it is panicking

... a shot in the dark but it looks like it failing to access/mount the root partition, depending on your setup.

Can you tell us a little about your partition setup? a picture of the kernel panic would be great, also if you know which filesystem types employed?
