What's a mechanical keyboard?

There are places you can try them in retail park large PC shops. You really do need to try before you buy but as has been said, there is nothing stopping you ordering online and returning it under DSR as well.

The main difference I have found (I own a Steelseries 6GV2), is that the whole experience is smoother. They keys push down like butter and for gaming they are unbeatable as the key activates half way down on the keystroke, so they are a lot quicker for gaming.

They are pricey but they are well worth it imo as they should last you a lifetime and spare keys are available for all makes.

Can you tell the difference between those switches and stock switches on another mechanical keyboard?

Not quite following you but theres a big difference between these blacks and membrane/rubber dome to me and I can tell the difference between these blacks and blues or browns.

The other thing I like about them is the feeling of quality, feels more solid, keypress doesn't wobble at all, etc. compared to your average off the shelf keyboard.

PS blacks are rubbish for type.

You should mention that they are kinda louder in use :)
I had loads of mechanical keyboards ages ago. IBM office ones.
Those ****ers ware indestructible !!! I bet i still got it back in Poland :D.
One of those outlaster like 5 rubber ones. Specialy in times you used to abuse keyboards while playing Mortal kombat 2 :D
If you got money buy mechanical it will last :).

I've got a cherry keyboard and although it's a no frills one, it certainly is the best keyboard I've used to date. I can't see me using anything other than a mechanical keyboard, ever.
