What's an acceptable commuting distance?

mines about 30 mins/20 miles.

anything more would need a considerable pay rise.

as it was when i did over 10 miles i only did it because i got fuel paid for.

I think it depends very much on the job, how much they are paying you, what sort of allowances (financial and otherwise) you get and what sort of travel it involves.

I agree with Gilly that about 1 hour as a maximum. My current commute is ~45mins by walk/tram/train and gives me time to listen to my ipod on the way ...

I used to have a two train commute, (Andover to Reading), and whilst that was ~1 hour it was an awful commute due to the train companies' handling of connections ....

Last job was 1hr and 15-30mins each way from Leeds to other side of Hull. Luckily i got paid for my travelling time as part of the deal for me to take the job, and they also paid my fuel bills. Apart from the travelling time, to make it 'legal' with the tax man, i had to drive into my Leeds office 3 days a week then drive from there to the office in Hull. Stuck it for nearly 1.5yrs, clocked up 50k+ miles in one year on the company car i also had, then had enough of it, applied for a local job that luckily paid more, but meant i wasn't getting up at 5am in the morning and getting in from work at 7pm. After that experience my limit would be 30-45 minutes at most.

Current job is only 7 miles away from home, so very short journey time.

No more than an hour door to door unless it was for something like 80k+ a year.

For most people it's probably a sliding scale. If someone was to offer you an additional £5k a year in return for an additional 10 minutes on your commute, you wouldn't take it?

I mean, it's only a measly wafer thin 10 minutes?

I think this depends entirely on how much you enjoy the job, and how much you are being remunerated for the time.

I'd happily travel a couple of hours even for a 9-5 if i loved the role, and the rate was high.

I've got a choice of getting a car and commuting 2 hours either way, or moving to Coventry and walking to work.

For £17.5k, I don't really think I can take a 2 hour commute...

I wouldn't consider more than 35-40 minutes door to door absolute max.

But then when you're working 8.30am - 9.00pm or longer you don't want travelling to take up your only free time. I know people who work the same hours and do a 4 hour round commute a day :(

There isn't enough money in the world. You'd never get to enjoy it.

I think the only thing that would make me consider a long commute (1.5hr +) now would be a next step career move to a next level position that had a fairly large remuneration step also (i.e. 20k+). Fairly comfortable on the wages i'm on, can be home in 10 minutes which means i can be out on the golf course/pub in 20minutes if it's a nice day/evening.

Easy. I think commuting is not acceptable, point! I walk to and from walk every day and it is a Joy! 20 mins each way!

I used to live 13 mins walk to work and that is me walking slowly. I can be home at 5:10 if i walk just a little bit quicker. Used to go home for lunch too and watch the 1:00 news.

Takes me under 10 minutes to drive to work :o unless I am visiting customers, then it depends on where I'm going and what time the first appointment is.

I cycle for anywhere from 1 hour to 3 hours each way to work depending on the route I take and time of year. I love cycling so the time does not bother me and it allows me to get the training done on the way to work. I also drive it a couple of days a week. 20 - 25 minutes on traffic free road.

For a while my daily commute totalled almost 3 hours by car. You get used to it after a while but when you stop it, you wonder how you could ever go back to it!

Yeah I don't mind cycling, it's 50 minutes for me to cycle, but 2 days in the week I have to drive. I hate it.

the other bad thing about a long daily motorway commute is that you can get complacent whilst driving through the sheer monotony of it all, plus you may end up with the same syndrome i had 'Get me out of this **** hole' when leaving at night and ended up getting done twice in a year for speeding. Strangely since changing jobs i've not had a ticket!
