What's an acceptable time to wait for a company to respond to my job application?

I've applied for a job at a well known games company. I dropped off my CV and cover letter a week ago.

I just wondered what sort of time I should wait to hear from them?

I don't want to seem impatient and I don't want to make it seem like I've lost interest in the position.

What do you reckon?

Perhaps checking if theres a closing date (as they may well still be accepting applications). Other than that I'd say wait another week and then, perhaps, ask for feedback about your application.

If they say you've been unsuccessful again ask for feedback to see what you're doing right/wrong.

give them a call and ask when the closing date for applications is, they dont have to know its you, but i the only thing one phone enquiry is going to do is make you look eager (in a good way).

If it's a speculative application or if it's past the closing date, give them a ring and ask if they've had a chance to have a look at your CV and if/when they plan to hold any interviews. Sound keen but don't pester them.

I have waited over 2 months from applications to interviews, and I have just got a job 3 months after the interview, it totally depends on the company you apply to. It cant hurt to make a polite inquiry as to the status of your application, it may even help to show such interest.
