lol whats better for that price then?

Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 NCQ 300GB ST3300831AS SATA 8MB Cache - OEM (HD-021-SE)

Western Digital Caviar SE16 320GB 3200KS SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (HD-070-WD)

The recent lot of maxtors have been "poor" to put it bluntly.

well the segate goes over my budget, but why the issue with the maxtors? I've got one here thats over 6 years old and still working

The recent ones (last 3 years or so) have had poor build quality... if you want fast, then get the Hitachi Deskstar.

I just ordered a

Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 NCQ 250GB ST3250824AS SATA-II 8MB Cache - OEM (HD-058-SE)

(amongst other nice things!) which OC are selling for £61.95+vat which I think is a bargin :)

i brought maxtor because its 2nd fastest out of most makes... just behind hitachi... but since Hitachi's are death-stars i wasn't sure on them.

I was recommended seagate for reliability however they so much slower it seems (storage review)

hmmm needs to be 300gig m8
tell us how it performs when you get it

The Maxtor MaxLine III NCQ 300GB (HD-096-MD) is £95.12

The Western Digital Caviar SE16 320GB (HD-070-WD) is £93.94

Take the WD mate, 320GB and cheaper than the maxtor, not to mention more reliable.

Hitachi don't make deathstars - in fact, they are probably the second most reliable drive out there behind Seagate. They really are top quality drives.

IBM made the deathstars and that was a while ago and caused by a design/component flaw.

Hitachi brought IBMs Harddrive wing. Hitachi's top end drives have IBM's naming sceme.

Hitachi have the "fixed" deathstar, and that is what they have today as the fastest 7200rpm drive on the market
I know - my point was they are completely fixed now and are great drives. In fact, just 3 weeks ago I bought 4x80GB Hitachi's - very fast drives, despite being 80GB drives. Excellent performers and I'm very happy. Seagate have some competition.

your a fool :p

quality? hitachi = ibm = DEATHSTAR

shows how much you know about hard drives. :p
No, I think you'll find the fool is the man who slates Hitachi :p. They are quality drives now. I bought 4 of them just in the last month I've been that impressed.

2 models of IBM back in 2001 = deathstar - shows how much you know about Hard drives :p. (GXP60 and 75 IIRC - don't quote me on it though).

I think Western Digital have slipped a bit - Top 3 for me now = Seagate, Hitachi, WD in that order whereas WD used to have 2nd spot.
