Hi guys

Thinking of getting rid of my AMD FX-53 chip and getting a X2 4200+ chip the thing is I run my PC for gaming and was wondering if the X2 would increase game performance.

Spec
Asus SLI SE
AMD FX-53
2x XFX 7900GT

Guess it depends on what your FX-53 is clocked at.

The duel-core will definiatly be better long term as more games and apps come out that can use it properly.

Your FX-53 will be clocked at 2.4GHz stock with 1MB of L2 cache

The X2 4200+ is only clocked at 2.2GHz with 512KB of L2 cache

In single threaded applications the X2 will be a little slower due to the slower clock speed and the smaller cache size

In multi threaded applications though the X2 will be quicker due to the extra core. It will also aid multi-tasking and it can make windows feel more responsive

I guess things like the Unreal 3 engine will be runing multi thread?

Also is it possible to overclock the X2's to 2.4?

Last question what X2 would have a simular catch and clock to the FX?

The Unreal 3 engine will be multi-threaded and the X2 4200+ will easily clock to 2.4GHz. If you're interested in clocking then I'd get an X2 3800+ - 2.0Ghz stock but will easily clock to 2.6GHz, possibly a little further

The X2 4800+ will have the same clock speed and cache as the FX-53

being an much older fx53(still 130nm i think?) a x2 will most likely, on air, overclock higher than a fx53 can so you won't lose anything, you're not likely to gain much right now in games though either, although you do have an sli setup.

what resolution are you gaming at? really you're unlikely to be very cpu limited at all though its possible if you're using 1920x1200 or something then maybe a faster cpu will give you a few more fps here and there. i always recommend a dual core if you use your computer a lot anyway as the responsiveness of a dual core system over a single core makes me weep when i have to use a single cored comp at uni, m8's houses.

Think I will go for the 4800 should beable to squeeze more juice out of that when I need to

The 4800 will not clock higher than say the 4400 just because of the higher initial clockspeed.
