On board SATA III or PCI card to run SSD ?

On board SATA3 unless you're buying a good quality card.

The add in cards you buy for £20-£30 are no better, maybe even worse, than the on board ports.

I wouldn't bother.

Nothing to be ashamed of.

Can't really advise on a good card as I don't use one myself.

I've just read that the cheap cards don't add any improvement over the on board ports. They're more of an add on for those who don't have USB3.0 or SATA3.
