whats considered a "safe" hdd temp?

There was an article (can't remember where, sorry), which stated that HD temps do not actually affect failure rate. My HDs run 30-35c ish, so I'd say that was about normal anyway :)

I had an old scsi drive that was so hot it felt like it would burn you, but worked fine, I guess each drive has its own safe specs.

I'd say fairly warm is fine, with air moving over it.

Most manufacturers spec up 0C to 55C as a normal operating temperature, some are a touch higher (7200.10s go to 60C)

I have a seagate 200gb sata drive, and Ive just looked at the temp, its only 26c, and my pc has been on over 16hrs.

but Speedfan says.......The average temperature for this hard disk is 39C (MIN=27C MAX=52C) and yours is 26C. :D

37C should be absolutely fine, as rpstewart says the operating parameters for drives allow up to around 55C. I used to have 3 hard drives running for around 2 years at about 55-60C without any problems although I've reduced the number of hard drives and they are now at about 38C which is fine. :)
