Little stuck here and almost out of ideas. My downstairs PC has stopped working for no apparent reason, no software installed recently or settings changed. It cannot go on the internet, use MSN or outlook.

The network is up and running and it can view files on other PC’s. IP and settings all appear ok, system restore and a reinstall of the network card didnt work. Its over a wireless network and all the other PC's work ok on the internet.

What could stop the internet but keep the network working?

Has that comp got an ip addy or a DN ?

Click start the chose run in that box type cmd.
A window will open. In that type ipconfig /all
a load of stuff will come up, see if you got a IP address and a DNS and default gatway.

If not type in ipconfig /release then after about 5 secs type in ipconfig /renew
Then type in ipconfig /all again to see if you got IP addy and dns

Its not my ISP all the other PC's work fine.

It’s got an IP but cannot ping other network PC’s which is odd as it can access there folders.

CMD ipconfig e.c.t brings up an error. Tried to reset the IP stack and winsocket but didn’t work.

“Not recognised as an internal or external command”
In fact it appears any valid commands that should work in CMD bring that error up.

Looks like something has changed your settings.

I would delete your network connection for that comp and do a new one.

If cmd keeps coming up with errors it my mean that the router is blocking it.

Compare DNS and IP address ranges between all your PC's as it could be an incorrect range or something like that.

Check that all the PC's are in the same work group as that could be another possibility.

Other than that i'm out of ideas.

Hope this helps ;)

IP/DNS all fine. Tried DHCP and manual IP neither worked. What did work was a long cat5 cable. So its got to be something to do with the wireless settings. So the big questions is what wireless setting stops the internet working but lets you browse the network?

Thanks for all the suggestions. Going take a few hours break before trying to fix it again.

I was going to suggest MAC Filtering but you say the computer can access the network so it probably won't be that.

On the router or wireless access point make sure that the wireless is pointing to the right Internet gateway.

is it vista 64bit, do you have nod32 installed?

it has some incompatibilities with the older versions i think.. try removing that, then rebooting
