What's folding?

I wonder if this is the right forum, but I've heard the term in the context of overclocking, so I guess this is the right place.

So what IS folding? I've not found any mention of it in stickies or FAQs, just people using the term off-the-cuff in posts.

They do have a point...

Folding is a competitive online sport: the faster your computer can process units allocated to it in comparison to others. The results are then posted back online and everybody goes crazy.

There are a number of distributed computing projects so it's up to you what you want to do: find aliens? Or cure disease?
