Whats going on with the GTX260 Core216?

Not sure how the GTX260 compares but my GTX280 sounds like a jet engine when pushed hard, or at least it did before I took the stock cooler off :)

FWIW, I was all set to get a 4870 until the problems with Vista x64 and multiple monitors reared its ugly head. That put me right off and, as I couldn't wait for the drivers to be fixed, I went for the 280 instead. Never looked back - superb piece of kit.

How are they poorer?

And the fan's certainly nowhere near being loud. I get a whoosh at startup as the system boots and then silent gaming from there on.

the prices are not that bad if you know where to look

ive seen the BFG one for £207 inc and the OC version for £225 inc

hoping to get mine next week if they still have stock

even if you could would you, considering the 260 doesnt even touch the 4870 anyway, the existing 260 is a joke, and the only reason you dont really see the new ones is that they will want to shift as many of the old ones as possible before making the new ones widly available so as to not be left with old stock that they cant really do anything with.

oh man just forget about 216 get 4870 if u not then u fail at life and u will not get any mustang even u good at cars and m3 will lough at u

i will get an ATI card as soon as they drop CCC, add game profiles and custom resolutions

This is the main issue I have at the moment with my newly acquired 4870. So much so, I may sell it and keep my 8800GT for a while longer.

A shame because otherwise it's a top card :(

Them x1950xt's used to make a right racket but this is going back years. Is the 4870 really as quiet as the 8-series nvidia's ?

I'd have to hear it to believe it i think!

35% fan is almost inaudible over my Noctua CPU fan. 40-45% is my game fan and my headphones block it out.

I idle at 50C, if I wanted to I could further decrease the 2D idle clocks and drop down to 30% fan... but it's not a problem. AT ALL.

Unless you're a Quiet PC person.

Someone should really sticky a thread titled "4800 FAN IS NOT NOISY!!!!!!!!!"...

You'd have thought that if you read so many reviews, you'd have picked up the ability to speak properly.

So this GTX 260 with 216 cores rather than 192, is better (performance wise, generally speaking, on average, forgetting the price-performance ratio, etc etc *sprinkles icing over post*) than the ATI 4870?

You can get a BFG OC2 GTX 260 for like £40 more than the cheapest 4870, and you get a 10 year warranty then... which is pretty much a guarantee it's not gonna break. The short warranties on ATI are what worries me most as I've had multiple cards die just out of warranty and I'm fed up with it! BFG will have you a new one within the week if it breaks so from experience it's well worth paying the extra cash for a good company and warranty.

If the GTA 260 is all-round faster than the 4870, I think I will buy one.

What's the point in a 10yr warranty? you expect to be able to get it's retail worth of a replacement after even 3 years in a new card if it breaks?

Unlikely.

Transparency AA is a different setting to MSAA itself... but from running the 2 cards side by side I'm not suprised the ATI gets the higher FPS because of issues like that its not really running at the same quality as the nVidia. Infact from my observation it looked like it was only doing 2x on some of the edges in 8x mode - when the nvidia card was properly applying AA. Unfortunatly I only borrowed the 4870 card to make my own mind up so can't get benchies or screens to back it up.
