I currently have a 23inch samsung something or other cant remember the model name but its old and miserable.

I want a new monitor but all the abbreviations confuse me

pc:
970gtx SC
4g ram
i5 devils canyon

what should i be looking at willing to spend up to £350 on a new monitor but want to get the right thing that will be fairly future proof. I would like to get something around the 27inch mark

How much time do you spend gaming versus stuff like image editing? and/or do you spend more time playing single player or multiplayer games?
 
its just used for gaming really. I faff around in photoshop once in a blue moon just for a craic.

mainly play multiplayer games battlefield/cod/gw2 with the occasional single player game
 
I couldnt personally live without high hz but its because I play fast paced games like first person shooters. If you play mmo's / slower stuff then i expect IPS is the better choice.
 
Depends on if you play competitively. If not, then you'll probably get the nest experience from a VA or IPS panel. Colours are better as are viewing angles, but response times (different from refresh rate) are a little slower. You can now get high refresh rate IPS panels, but they may be a little out your price range.

In short, I'd go for an IPS ultrawide 29" 2560x1080.

With a GTX 970 you'll be looking at a 1440p monitor as it's not quite 4K ready.

Ideally you'll want one with a minimum screen size of 27" - no scaling required, and generally considered the ideal PC screen size these days - not too big and not too small.

You'll want it to be IPS for the viewing angles and vibrant colours giving it the wow factor you desire. Response times have improved hugely over the years so ghosting shouldn't be much of an issue.

As a FPS gamer you'll also want a monitor that is capable of 60Hz plus, in the 120Hz-144Hz region. Given your graphics card is made by Nvidia, a big bonus would be a G-sync enabled monitor.

This pretty much gives you the Asus ROG PG279Q. It costs about £550 depending where you look, but it's a considerable upgrade on what you have. If you want a 4K monitor for FPS games forget it till Pascal is out.
