What's Happend?

Hi there,

I was installing Windows XP onto a PC and it go to around 53% and it crashed.

I reset the PC, but now the Monitor is not displaying anything? I have tried a different monitor and that didn't work.

The monitor is acting like its got a signal, but its not displaying anything.

What have i done? Have I broken the graphics card?

clear the cmos if you know how (read in your motherboard manual)

Ok this is what it says in the Manual:

But it doesn't state a time period, should i use do it instanteously (for 1 second) or other?

Hold the jumper on for around 3 seconds to make sure.

Try reformatting your hard drive with a win98 disk, after fdisking it

I know a couple of people that have had this problem because hardware has not been installed right, so check your hardware as well

clear the cmos if you know how

to clr CMOS...

Take battery out
put the jumper on the clear CMOS in yer case put the jumpers on pin 2 - 3 for 1 min
then put the jumper back on defauly CMOS setting in your case pins 1 and 2
then put the battery back in...

If this does not work...no signal usually means gfx card prob....take it out and reseat it...

Do you have an onboard gfx card?

Try reformatting your hard drive with a win98 disk, after fdisking it

Thats the method find best to use, it makes 100 percent certain that way its reset.

But, about the no display thing... maybe he just misread what the guy said?

I know thats why i told him how to reset the CMOS...

I was referring to the display thing not the CMOS suggestion....

I can't as there is no display, I have no other PC I can put the HDD in yet, although I could try this tomorrow. I can see why this happend as the windows didn't fully install as stated in the first post.

I have an ATI 7000 AGP graphics card (No onboard)

I have tried this method of resetting the cmos with no avail.

I have also tried reseating the card as said but with no avail again.

yeh im with you Conrod apologies for ppl not being able to read properly....

It could be either ** mobo or ** gfx....

can you borrow a gfx card from a mate? if yes I would try that and if it still doesnt work it could be your mobo....

Even if your fans spin and you have some lights this still means it could be a dead mobo...

so its one of those two in my opinion...

Clearing CMOS does not require a removal of the battery, thats a full factory reset.

On the matter in hand, i'd grab another Graphics card to test in the system firstly.

Have you stripped the comp down to essential parts only, a PC without the hard disk should still give you a display aswell.

In my opinion i'd have the Motherboard, PSU, and graphics hooked and see if you get any display then, drives are not essential to get a post, so it narrows it down to 3 pieces of hardware.

I am starting to think that it's the mainboard that it broken, I don't have another graphics card or PSU?
