i've got a domain and host. i log in through ftp and get all the directories

just wondering what they all do. can i clean any of them up?

access-logs = i take it this is when i access the server/ftp?
etc = ?
logs = it's empty
mail = email accounts i create within cPanel?
perl = empty too
public_ftp = not a lot in there?
public_html = know this one, my website files
tmp = looks like web statistics?
www = just found out this is an alias of public_html. why have two folders the same?

a few files

cpbackup-exclude.conf = ?
windows loader = ?

thanks

www is a shortcut for a shorter path to remember/type and for compatibility etc and you're correct on all the others. etc is a system folder, logs has access logs if you choose to enable log retenton in cPanel, cpbackup is cpanel-related stuff.

Basically don't touch anything except public_html though you can create folders to store data which isn't accessible over the web too :)

ok thanks.

whats the best way to backup my website, just copy the www folder? or backup the whole home directory?

do the hosting company take regular backups, maybe i don't need to worry?

dont put your trust in the company makeing backups. Normally better to backup though Cpanel, dont forget your databases aswell.
