Whats on your Home Server

Hi mate,

Thanks for the info,

Im just running Windows 8.1 as my Home Server OS. Main reason being its an HTPC running Plex as well so couldn't find a good way to virtualize this with the TV Tuner card as graphics card inside it. I have 2x 2TB WD Reds running with Stablebit for the main storage and VM Workstation for my VM's. I do have a server 2012 license and did want to use this and setup a Hyper V server and run my VM's that well but found limitations with being able to virtualize the HTPC

Yeah, I wouldn't virtualise an HTPC.

Having an HTPC doing so much would drive me a bit bonkers... I like my living room silent :)

I don't know about setting up 8.1 as DNS server... It might have the functionality built in, or you might have to use a third party app.

Maybe wait till you get a standalone HTPC & setup DNS when you hide the server in basement or under stairs? :D

Not on this system... This one only seems to take about the same amount of time as without a local DNS... But i remember setting up one through Ubuntu server a few years ago and that was doing what you mention... So perhaps it depends on the specific implementation. Seems like DNS is one of the few things WS2K8 is good at

It's setup though Server 2012, i probably didn't set it up properly then.

Hmmm... Odd... It is feasible that it could do it though

Once your cache is built, it should be quite a bit quicker.

I don't know a way to copy the whole set of records or anything though... I wonder how big that file would be

I currently have two boxes in my set up

I have a Asrock C2750 with a 500gb SSD and 32gb RAM which is running Hyper-v 2012r2 Core with the following VMs
  • Windows 2012r2 DC
  • DHCP server running on Ubuntu
  • MySQL Server on Ubuntu
  • Wordpress and Dokuwiki Server on Ubuntu
  • Apache Proxy on Ubuntu
  • Media Acquisition Server on Ubuntu
  • Windows 8.1 Client Machine for Remote work
  • Minecraft Server on MineOS
These all run constantly with a couple of small Exchange Labs that I power on for testing the applications from my work.

I have all my files and data sitting on a Windows 2012r2 Datacenter Core box with 2x3tb and 2x1tb currently housing the data backing up through crashplan to my parents HP N36l. This box is an i3-3220 with 24gb RAM currently.
Want to eventually go for a more standardised drive layout of 8x3tb drives in RAID 10 but that will have to get snuck past the other half.

Currently running a couple of ghetto servers , low loads and minimal traffic for learning purposes

G3258
8gb ddr3 2400
Gigabyte dsh3 matx
120gb ocz arc

Running 2012r2
Web server via IIS and MySQL + Li extensions ( 3 sites , 1 FTP , single MySQL server )

Athlon 5150
8gb 1333
Gigabyte am1
2 x 2 TB WD Reds

2008r2

Running teamspeak & assetto corsa server :)
Used for large backups off the network

Updated my home platform... Now have:

1 x Dell R410 with dual E5630s and 24GB RAM
1 x SM X8DTL-iF with dual L6430s and 20GB RAM + 12 hotswap bays
1 x i5 based baremetal domain controller with hyper-v running vSphere Centre 6.0 in windows server 2012 r2 with 10gb Ram.

the SM machine is my storage system but both machines run similar software set-ups for redundancy.

Still looking to expand with another 4u rack to put my gaming pc in and run virtualised instances with pass-through of the gpus and stream to other parts of the house.

Hardware: HP N54L + 2x 4GB DDR3 + 60GB SSD (System) + 2x 2TB in RAID 1 mdadm (Data) + 2TB (backup drive)

Software: Ubuntu Server 14.04 LTS + Plex + Samba

... and it works like a treat :)

I have:

HP N36L Microserver running Xpenology:

4 x 2TB HDD & 4GB RAM

CCTV for 2 x IP Webcams (remote access via DS Cam)
CrashPlan backup - all computers write to the destination on NAS which is then backed up to cloud.
Plex

HP Microserver Gen8 running Server 2012 R2 with Media VM for:

Basic RAID1 setup with 6GB RAM

iTunes server
Plex Connect for AppleTV to hook in to the Plex server
Soon to move Plex from N36 to this server for faster encoding when exporting to phone and tablet.

All runs through HP switch hooked up to a Cisco ASA5505 which i used to replace my Plusnet modem, using Cloudtrax APs for WiFi.

I have my itunes server running inside vmware workstation on windows 7 as its the only way i can get my phone to sync with a VM. Dont want itunes on my main machine as its just clogs things up!

Would really like to get a server 2012 r2 license as well but they are dam pricey!

N54L running as a file server.

Gen8 with a Xeon 1230V2/16Gb running ESXi 6.0 hosting plex and 3 server 2012r2 vm's.

Updated my home platform... Again! Now have:

1 x Dell R410 with dual E5630s and 26GB DDR3 RDIMMs
1 x SM X8DTL-iF with dual L6430s and 26GB DDR3 RDIMMs (Rosewill LV-L4000 case)
1 x i5 2400 on Q77 Express ATX motherboard with 8GB ram running Xpenology & 12 Hotswap 3.5" drive bays (Rosewill LV-L4500 case) (on delivery waiting to arrive from various ebay sellers)
1 x i5 2400 based baremetal domain controller with hyper-v running vSphere Centre 6.0 in windows server 2012 r2 with 10gb Ram (also my MediaPortal TVServer for my custom NZ sky system)

The new Q77 based motherboard with i5 2400 is my dedicated xpenology (Synology DSM 5.2 custom) storage system running SHR-1 arrays. Once built it will run my NFS/iSCSI stores for the vSphere hosts. Dual GBe network ports built in to the motherboard with AMT 8.0 for remote management. It also has enough PCI slots to run my 8 port HBA SAS adaptor at full speed, even with SSDs occupying all bays plus I can install 10gbe network adaptor at a later date to increase through put from the network.

Still looking to expand with another 4u rack to put my gaming pc in and run virtualised instances with pass-through of the gpus and stream to other parts of the house however I'll need to upgrade my rack first as its only a 12u rack and I'm at 11u with the current setup and 1u dedicated to switches.

Its nothing like your setups but finally got mine up and running tonight. Apart from the SSD and HDDs, its all donated from friends who didnt want old parts anymore.

E4600
4GB 1333
60gb SDD for OS
A few 500GBs here and there for storage

Only got plans for it to be a file server for me and the wife to backup too and stream from when needed. Might setup a simple FTP on it so I can access from anywhere, but not tonight. :)

Until about 2 years ago, I didn't know much about virtualisation or server OSs and isntead had an HTPC in the lounge that did TV via built in cards. I then got a free copy of Server 2012 R2 that I started to play with the centralised server option and AD sign on and then I went crazy! Most of my setup comes in to play as I have limited rooms for the kids and no office so I virtualise everything to save space, and with my gaming pc to become virtualised I can use steam streaming to feed the other mini HTPC clients with data in any room of the house, meaning I don't need a dedicated office!

I get to use and play with quite a few servers at work, but in the house I just never had the means to have on. This one is running 2008R2 which I got free ages ago but just decided to use it.

I have simply setup remote desktop at the moment, licenced up and just doing updates now. Going to take a while. :)

Can you pass through devices like tv tuners and graphics cards in Hyper V? I would really like to try and virtualize my HTPC under a hyper v 2012 server but not to sure if and how it would work

Running at the mo:
2x Intel NUC Haswell i3's as ESXi hosts
HP Nxx box with several 750GB drives in for VMware lab storage
2014 Mac Mini running iTunes and Plex

VM/server wise I run vCenter server appliance, 2 Centos DNS/NTP servers, VMware Update Server and random lab stuff I boot up for testing
