What's that noise?

Just a word of warning re the heat shield, I removed the same thing from an Astra Belmont years back due to it rattling, within a week the large coolant hose to the left melted and left me stranded.

The heat shield is there for a reason, the clue is in the name. :)

He is correct, make sure to keep hoses away from the exhaust pipes. I've had no problems on my ''93 Rolla without the heat shield, but this can differ per car of course!

You can always check yourself, the throttle cable (top left in your picture I believe) can be pulled under the bonnet too, no need for a 2nd person in the car.

If it's the heat shield, don't worry, either mend/glue it in the place where it's rattling with heat resistant (epoxy) paste, or even Gun Gum, or pull the heat shield off ( careful to not damage the rad while breaking it off).

Tbh your bonnet space looks very nice to work on, newer cars have so much plastic crap and are much more cramped, old cars ftw for a self mechanic :D ( forgetting the bolts and nuts that wont move or even break off due to rust :().

That's exactly what I did. Revved the engine by nudging the thingy on the engine. Seen mechanics do it before, so I knew what to do. That's how I narrowed it down to the heatshield. The noise was gone today after I lifted it off the engine mounting point.

Yeah, I'm not gonna remove it. Even when it sags down again, it'll make a noise, but it isn't actually doing any harm, and as Scania and Dogbreath point out, it must be there for a reason. At most, I'll bend the bottom of it to keep it clear of the engine mounting point.

About the engine bay being nice to work in, whenever a mechanic works on that car, they almost always comment how nice it is to work on. I'm getting a new car in a few weeks, but I'm very tempted to keep this one as a refurbishment project.

Oh for the love of God. Now the clutch has gone. The clutch pedal won't come back up. Pretty sure it just needs a new cable, but it's so annoying!

Cheap if I can get my hands on a used clutch cable, but it'll take a few days to get one, I expect. In the meantime, I have to walk or cycle everywhere. Annoying.
