Whats the advantage of using a 360 VGA cable?

the only major problem i have with the official vga cable i have, is that backwards compatibility doesn't work, so you have to have a component cable to play original xbox games, the petition starts here! :D
Halo2 and ninja gaiden work perfectly on mine

Ive played a few backwards compatible games too, and Im on VGA. Only problem I have run into was when Halo 2 tried to update itself the other week.

via vga? maybe it certain games then  have you got the latest dashboard update?

I believe some of the older xbox games that are backwards compatible are 50hz only (I think halo 2 is 60hz).

IIRC VGA is not compatible with 50hz refresh hence why it doesn't work.

VGA gives a much sharper image. Colour can get a bit washed but as mentioned u just need to pump it up to the right settings.

If you had a newish samsung there is an article to solve the VGA washed out colours via the service menu.

VGA is far superior to component in my experience for DVD's, and you also can get problems using component cables too.

Dvds are encoded using the y/pb/pr colour format, not rgb so the component cables are what you are technically supposed to use as they give the colour truest to the original dvd video. Component video gives a greater range of colours than vga.

where you getting the idea vga upscales ?? vga is fine for games but i wouldn't touch it with a barge poll for movies . you walked into a home cinema store and asked for a vga set-up and they will laugh in your face .

they dont even sell it. atm the current connects ( in order of best ) is :-

hdmi
component
rgb scart
scart
composite

now i know you can do a dvd picture via vga but vga is never classified. its probably above rgb scart

you look in any home cinema mag and vga doesn't get a mention

erm no, the 360 upscales dvd video to whatever resolution you are running at via VGA. It plain doesnt on component, which displays dvds at 480p. Im not disputing the fact that component offers a greater range of colours than vga though.

Technically maybe, but the fact is that on the 360 at least, a VGA cable seems to offer better DVD playback.

i said vga doesn't upscale. never mentioned whatever the xbox does. and component does work at 720p.
What sort of point is that then? VGA doesn't do anything apart from carry a signal. The 360 upscales to whatever res you are using when you use VGA. Therefore it's perfectly accurate to say the 360 upscales when using VGA.

I love the way you're all arguing over which cable is better for DVD playback, yet you use a 360 to watch films..

Get a standalone DVD player you fools!!

2 things...

1) The 360 is actually a very good DVD player if you set it up right, it probably equals most mid-range players.

2) If you have your 360 in your spare room or study, like me, you don't want a separate piece of equipment taking up room.

I've got my 360 running through vga on a 32" Wharfedale LCD3210AF and the clarity/colours are crisp and vibrant at 1280x768 @ 60Hz. Now, my friend has his running through component on a LG tv, I'm not sure of the model, and even with the brightness etc turned up it's still difficult to make out what's on screen sometimes as any shadowed areas are completely black, even in areas where the shadows shouldn't be that dark, hence it just looks like solid black shapes on the screen which makes gaming quite difficult at times. It almost put me off buying my 360, it's that bad. Has anyone any idea what might be causing this? Dodgy TV? Dodgy component cable? Another overlooked setting?

Thanks

P.S VGA 4TW :)
