Its maybe just my daft sense of humour, Ax-2-Tre - Axe To Tree.

Ok, I just figured you meant axident...but that doesn't work :p
Or AX to Tree as in it'd crash into one...I'm obviously thinking negativly. :p

Just read all the posts...why is everyone saying how good the GT and GTi are...the OP was given a 1.0 Debut.

Because he asked what Ax's are like?

Maybe by reading how much better the GT* are then he may swap bits over from them to improve his car for next to nothing?

Is it wrong to discuss cars in this part of the forum?

lol o dont worry after 12months of driving this about me getting a 2lt :D 7 seater as ive got wife and 2 kids now and another one due december  so this little car is going to be a tight fit

No, but it seems a bit silly saying how great the other models are without mention of his model or similar is all.

Not trying to rub people up the wrong way or anything. :)

I agree that swapping bits from other models is a sensible thing to do, I want to put a GTi suspension setup and GTi wheels on my 205 (from a 205 GTi, not an AX GTi :p) as the handeling isn't brilliant.

My mate has an AX 1.0. Cheap to insure etc and an ideal first car of you're under 25. But you've got a wife and kids, i assume you're nearer my age so why look for a ZX or Pug 306?

Bigger, better, safer, more practical, marginally more to insure and to buy but must work out better in the longer term. If in 12 months you're not ina position to get a 7 seater you'll just about get away with it whereas with the AX you're stuffed.

EDIT

You've been given it.

It's a car to do a job - get you a no claims bonus. For that it's perfect, and better still it it was free. Happy motoring :)

lol i love the edit

yea was looking at a bigger car escort or something like but thats £200 more to insure and would have cost me money lol

idea is to get ncb and trade in for something bigger and better
but i wont be driving kids about much as ones travel sick lol

Just using it for shoping trips and my road trips lol :D

My friend had a GTI AX and he scared the crap outta me driving it...small, light, bit of power and an idiot can be terrifying

my first car was a new ax 1.1i forte

very light, went fast for a 1.1 but the brakes had a terrifying habit of locking up easily, with no abs.

apart from a dodgy radio i had no other gremlins with 3 yrs ownership (95-98)

I like em, they are a hoot to drive.

Unfortunately they do dent with a hard stare, and every single model was made on a friday afternoon :p

Mine's a 1.1i echo, and i do agree, there's not much room between the pedals. Having said that mine's in excellent nick, and they're cheap as hell to repair. It's basic motoring, but wheels are wheels :)

Yep, that brings back a scary moment that I had with mine. Size 11's are really too big to drive small French cars. Do the French have smaller feet in general I wonder?

Dunno, I drive my 205 quite comfortably and I've got size 13 feet.

A bit of a shame that people chose the lardy, carelessly designed Polo instead.

770KG Vs. 655KG equals lardy?

And please expand on carelesly designed?

But as has been said thus far, you can't go wrong with cheaper older french superminis, they just love to keep going! A quick test drive will see if you find the seats/pedals a problem at all, but I bet you won't!

My partners AX 1.0 Spree 1995 (M) has cost us (apart from usual costs) about £250 in six years - a couple of brake pipes and a speedo cable!

I find the pedals okay for my size 10's and the seats are wayyyyy comfortable.

However, I'd swap it for a VW Polo any day.

I had an AX GT as my first car.

It was awesome fun, apart from once when the radiator came unclipped and fell back on to the manifold, the plastic header/endtank melted :( and the HG went.

Ax's are awesome, first car i drove on my own.

our family has one kicking around just going to whoever.. has dents on every panel, covered about 50k on its 1.5D engine that still does 70mpg and not much has gone wrong on it apart from broken speedo cable and the occasional door falling off.

insurance is so cheap that i beleive the insurerers actually give you money..

if your cheap and like to drive cheap there isnt much else cheaper.
