Whats the best bang-for-buck CPU at the moment?

I am potentially upgrading my mobo and CPU (see my sig.) and was wondering what the best value for money CPU was at the moment? I want to stay on the core 2 duo/quad line I think (unless AMD have made vast improvements in the last 6 months!)

For example, how does the top-end Core2Duo E6850 compare with the Core2Quad Pro 6600???

Thanks in advance....

They'll be about the same at stock speeds.

I didn't actually realise that you had the E4400. Changing from one dual-core to another would be crazy. Either keep your E4300 or get the Q6600.

Hmmm... *considers raiding the piggy bank for a bigger upgrade that was first planned* :p

Before I start considering the jump to a quad core, need to make sure a) my Akasa 460W PSU will handle my new bits & bobs ok and b) nothing else (ram, gfx card) will bottleneck it too much!?!?

Thanks for the input guys...

It might be a tad too low on the 12v rails if overclocking, but will probably be ok if you're not (and judging by your board you probably won't be overclocking).

Thing is, I will be changing the mobo too, probably to a P35 board (Gigabye or Abit I think) so was wanting to get the best out of my gfx card, memory and CPU!! :( I certainly cant afford to go buying a new (decent) PSU too!!

X38 if your buying a new mobo, Pci-e v2 :D P35 is only pci-e v1.1 and the prices are close enough to leave the X38 a viable option.

P35 DS3R = £75

Cheapest X38 = £140

86% more expensive is hardly "close".

Raiderx has a P35-DS4 for sale in the MM and I'm sure you won't have a problem finding a PSU in there either.

Just mentioning it since you are interested in bang for your buck, errr pound

Cob I wasn't refering to your post if I was I would have quoted you ;) just P35 and X38 in general. There are P35 boards well within price range of X38 offerings though not from a low budget standing.

Like

Asus P5K64 WS Intel P35

Gigabyte GA_X38_DS5 Intel X38

I know you were talking to the OP.

But suggesting an X38 board, and then comparing favorably them with a high-end P35, doesn't really fit in with the OP leaning towards bang-for-buck, especially when he's said his budget is tight ;)
